How much does it cost roughly, what's the process?

Looking at an vehicle pretty cheap, some sketch story about the owner being overseas, left in the sellers property. I'm tempted just to not screw with it on that premise alone.... But if a bonded title is going to run me under/close to $100 I'll consider it. Vehicle value is probably $800 based on year, make, & model.

Anyone done a bonded title and want to contribute?

I used the bond process about 10 years ago when buying a 1957 Austin Healey out of the state of Ga. which does not title cars that old . At that time the bond was around $90 for 3 years . , I have State Farm Insurance , so they sold me the bond , at the end of 3 years State Farm mailed the bond back to me for my records . I still had to get an inspector from the DMV to come out and go over the car checking all the numbers . Please note : I did have a bill of sale from the legal owner . I would check with NC DMV either online or in person to see if a bond will work on an abandoned car .

Call DMV license and theft Dept in your county first, you MUST have a bill of sale from the owner. The bond should cost you $100, you will also have normal fees at the tag office to get the title.
This. My uncle got a bonded title for a 48 Chevy. Call the licence and theft bureau. They can walk you through the process of you decide to go through with it. It took my uncle around a year to get it straight, not sure how much total cost was. The theft bureau is not the same as the plate agency where you get new tags, it's the dmv agents that audit inspection stations and bust up chop shops.

Unless it's just a super cool car, I'd walk away.... briskly.

With a sketchy story it's going to be more fun than, I would assume, Usual.
I tried to get a new title a few years ago for an abandoned truck. It didn't run. It was worth about $500.
Had the usual story; "owner died, blah blah, it's been sitting there for 10yrs, blah blah..."
The Title had been signed over from one owner to the other but had never been sent off and ownership officially transferred by the state.

Got up with the DMV and a bonding agency out of Newton, NC.

the process with them and even the DMV went pretty well.
Inspector came out, side arm and all (you WILL have to accomodate his 9-5 schedule). Looked it over and gave me what I needed to send to the state. You can also bring the vehicle to them (state patrol office).
They want the FULL STORY on how you aquired the vehicle and maybe even how the person before you got it.
They wanted a death certificate for the previous owner; could't find it. Did a bunch of research on GIS sites and County this and that. I started to get suspicious the person on the title was very not dead. It was going to take some very awkward phone calls I wasn't willing to make just for the whole thing to fall through. With other people involved, who didn't want to be involved, the whole thing started to feel really bad so I cut my losses and gave up.

All that to say;
make sure you have the straight story on the previous owner, where they are/what happened to them. The state WILL ask.
