I had some fun at some friends house shooting guns. Got to shoot my friend's 6.5 Creedmoor. First shot with it hit a 12" x 12" swinging steel target at 500 yards. Decided to try their smaller 6" x 6" swinging metal target with next shot. Forgot to check the sight level and missed, but hit it dead center with third shot. Rifle was incredible. I'm sure this was nothing compared to what some of the guys on here shoot regularly, but it was awesome for me to shoot it today. Very fulfilling.

And since :nopics:, here's a pic of the gun.

Is that a Savage? What scope were you looking through?

I don't know the specs on either. The scope was seriously long compared to the scope on my measly .22 caliber Marlin Papoose. I was able to hit a metal target with mine at 300 yards, after adjusting for the drop in trajectory. Had to aim about 10 feet above the target to hit it, but finally hit it. I'm sure it had the killing force of a Nerf dart at that point, but a plink's a plink. :)

I love the 6.5! I have a budget minded rifle that I can ring steel with all day at 500. Shootin is a blast!:usa::sniper::stupid::sniper::usa:

Depending on load, bullet etc it was probably still carrying around 2000fps and 1200lb/ft of energy at 500yds give or take a few in each category. More than enough for medium sized game at that range with the right shot placement. 6.5mm based rounds are a very versatile caliber for both target shooting and hunting.

6.5CM Savage Axis combo rifle(standard, not the Axis II with accutrigger), a bipod, $15 ebay trigger kit and practice. The stock glass is good to around 200yds. Beyond that, clarity drops considerably. You'll hurt a lot of feelings with that combo for under $250 to start with if you wait for a rebate on the rifle. Mine runs the 130gr Federal Gold Medal Berger the best for box ammo. Haven't jumped down the reloading hole yet.

I love the Axis II. I got mine for $425 out the door and its a tack driver.

Yo dog what are the load specs for that .22lr doing 2kfps at 500yd? I'm interested

Ok shooter folks....I'm a bit under the learning curve.

What's a 300 ultra mag worth? Wood stock light weight barrel blues steel. Fancy engraved action, Remington.

Kicks like a mule. Seriously thought about a muzzle break. Not very cheap or fun to shoot right now.......I don't even know what scope is on it?

Could it be made to shoot more pleasantly or just leave it be in the safe?
I don't shoot a lot. It was my dad's and he never fired a round in it before he passed.
I own a few other .30 caliber rifles.

If I reloaded would that mean some of the stuff could overlap?

I would like to try long range plinking......

.30-06, .223/5.56 AR, a 30/30 and some 22lr are my only other calibers. None of them are something I would care to build off of.

Leave it be or build something out of the 300 action?

Also looking for a go to book to learn reloading....I know about the reloaded manual or bible......but does it teach the basics?

.300 RUM would work for long range work. But probably be better out of a more utilitarian gun. No Idea what yours is worth.

Yes, the 30-06 and 30-30 use the same caliber bullet, but I think they are different weights. Could likely find a powder that works ok in all 3, but youre better off tailoring to each gun. Reloading is a blast :D. But you WILL NOT save money. You just shoot more. I used the Lee manual (my two presses are Lee) as well as Speer and Hornady manuals. Most have the basics in them. I prefer the Lee book for learning.

You can spend $200 for startup (Lee breech lock single stage press kit with dies and powder https://www.amazon.com/Lee-Precisio...96&sr=8-1&keywords=lee+single+stage+press+kit ), that will get you rolling. You can spend as much as you want, it goes up from there. Dillon is considered top notch, and it costs a pretty penny.

Im no expert, but if you wanted to see my setup, id be happy to show you what I know!

this was at our old rental house. (the WD-40 wasnt used on anything reloading wise, that just doubled as my work bench for a while.)
