I have an odd noise in my driveline I can't pin down (following a mild lift). Not clasic joint binding/vibration. I'm suspicious one omy my U-joints might be getting bad, although i've checked and lubed both and they "feel" ok.
Does anybody in the Winston area have a driveshaft w/ joints attached fitting an A/T 4runner I could borrow for like a day? All I need to do is attach it and go for a ride... it'd be nice to know that is indeed the problem before messing w/ replacement....

Is the driveshaft flange pattern the same on an auto and manual? If so you can borrow mine to test it. My driveshaft is out of a '93 4runner, v6, manual, 4x4. Let me know i can have it out probably tomarrow and get it to you.

I'm pretty sure the connection flange is the same for all the pre-85 vehicles.
However, the driveshaft lengths may be different. Any chance you could get a measurement? I have one out of an auto V6 4Runner of matching vintage, and was surpried to find the main shaft is about 3" longer than mine. Fully compressed it won't fit. I can only asume this means the V6 auto tranny is shorter than the 4 cyl unit (I they're different units)?
Mine measures right about 40" from center of U-joint to U-joint. (prob about 1.25" of slip yoke shaft sticking out).

Hm, now that I think of it, the difference might be the V6 rear 3rd member housing, maybe it's shorter?

Ill get a measurement tonight and get back to you tomarrow. Ive been in virginia all day and havnt had a chance to get the driveshaft out.

Mine's an '89 (gen 1) w/ auto tranny and 4cyl. Check the measurement above... I could come get it.

Chase, 'preciate the offer... but yeah a hike!
