Anyone ever heard of , seen, or found a write up on converting rear ZJ brakes from drum to disc ? If so i am very interested in learning more .

Thank you ,
Jason

alot of zjs came with disc brake in the rear and you should be able to either just swap the axle or get the brakes off of one.

hmm i did not know that. i have really only looked at mine . thanks for the info. ill keep an eye out at the local junk yard. cause i hate drum brake BS

depending on the axle may be the only thing to watch for as the axle flange may be different from a 35 to a 44. even through different years also.

I swapped the disc set up from my 44a to a d35 w no problem. just remove the 4 bolts and swap out each side. I had to do a little work to get the p brake set right but it will work.....

is it really that simple ? other than the parking brake problem ? did you need any other parts ?

you could just go with an 8.8 out of an explorer, not exactly a direct bolt in, but I noticed in your post in "gen. Chit chat" where you introduced yourself, that you have plans of lifting it higher, im gonna guess with that amount of lift you're thinking of going that you will want to run at the very least a 33" tire. With that in mind, id go ahead and just do an axle swap and get the disk brakes and somewhat stronger axle to handle the larger tires.

i was considering just changing out to 4.88 gears . im kinda new at this off road stuff im more car knowledgeable so any insight is welcome :)

the D35 your zj probably has is a notoriously weak axle. I changed mine out when I got the lift and went with bigger tires so that I wouldnt have to worry about it....as much. One of the more popular axle swaps is the 8.8 out of explorers, keeps same bolt pattern, roughly same width, and has disc brakes. I run 4.56 gears with 285/75/16 about a 33x10.5 I think. Im about to make the jump to 35's, so I will let ya know how that goes.

much thanks and do you have any pics of your jeep with that 6.5" lift like maybe side profile picture ? if you wouldnt mind sharing maybe you could post here or email to projectauto@gmail.com . thanks in advance

yea its really that easy no extra parts needed 'cept brake fluid n id go ahead n put on new pads n rotors but thats all. If yor gonna run anything bigger than a 33'' tire id def look into the 8.8 swap

alright so i guess i will start looking for 8.8 but before i do any write ups on that install, what all is involved ?
