Brake Trouble

I just bought a 83 CJ7. I got it running good but after about 6 miles of driving the brakes lock up. Either i drive it or let it run for 15 min and the brakes will lock up. shut the jeep off let it sit for a couple hours and the brakes are fine. 15 min later they lock up again. its all four locking up so it has to be something thta all four brakes have in common. I.E. master cylinder, booster, proportioning valve. I am going to flush the system today and see if there is some crud pluggin something up. but i think it might be the proportioning valve? has anyone every heard of this before?

I have never had that happen to me but my proportioning valve is leaking. Maybe this is a weak link. I am interested in hearing what others have to say. If you need any parts....PM me.

Try this Get the Proper size Bleeder screw wrench for your CJs Front brakes. Pump the brakes about 10-15 times. I bet it get harder each time you pump, and the pedal travels less.

Go crack open the bleeder screw. If it shoot fluid out then your fluids not returning to the Master cylinder. Could be issue with Prop Valve, or could be like I had. My MC Push rod was too long by about 1/8". I ground off some and it was good.

Power brakes??????????

sounds like a little to much assist in the power assist. remove your vac line see if it still happens after your 15 mins of running.

I had this happen to me after replacing the brake booster with a reman one from A**Zone. Come to find out, they gave me the wrong brake booster. Changed the booster out to the correct one and all is fine.

Try de-adjusting the rod from your brake pedal to the master cyl. I have seen this to be common occurance when someone is trying to get a better brake pedal due to mal-ajusted rear brake shoes.

OD2MAX is probably right, expecially if master or booster looks new. Got to remove master and take several measurements to figure out if there is no clearance between the pin and master cylinder plunger. A set of install instructions for a rebuilt master cylinder addresses this issue. The Zone or Advance may be able to help you if not found online.
