I have a 95 Grand Cherokee and when i got back from wheelin today i noticed somethin where the axle meets the wheel was messed up. I just bought this jeep and its my first jeep so i dont know a whole ton about them. Its hard to explain but where the axle meets the wheel there is what looks like an acordian piece of rubber. this piece is rippped. Inside there is a metal bar, mayb the axle, again i'm not sure on whats what and i havnt spent a whole lot of time lookin at it, but you can move this piece with your finger and it is loose. If i put the jeep in drive and hold the breaks it makes a sort of clicking sound like something is rotating and missing or broken. I'll try to get some pictures up as soon as i can. If anyone can give me any advice or let me know anything as far as what to do and what could possibly be wrong, please let me know.

Is this the front axle? Is it all-time 4wd? Some of the ZJs had CV front shafts, and sounds like the boot ripped and allowed dirt to get in it and tear up the CV joint... You should be able to pull the shaft out and replace it...

you might even be able to replace both sides with u-joint shafts, but someone else might needa chime in on that...

That sounds like what happened. I looked at it some more and its the joint in there and not the axle. Its sounds like what you said because the casing is ripped and yes its all-time 4x4. When i put it in drive and hold the brake down, it makes a sort of clicking sound almost like something is slipping. Does this mean the joint is shot and needs replacing?

If you are new to these things, then I should specify (replace the axle SHAFT), not the entire axle.

Just Go to the Auto Parts Store and ask for the Front driver side or passenger side (which ever is broke) CV axle, and they will give you the correct part. Thats it. It sounds like with your knowledge that you might want to get someone that knows what they are doing to put it in for you.

Carquest or Napa preferably.
