Broken Birf?

I was out playing around today and started to hear a clicking/popping sound coming from the right front. You can really only hear the noise when there is pressure on the drivetrain, like going up or down hill. On flat ground the pop is not there. Everything is still pulling like it should. I was under the impression that i would know when i broke a birf, and i have no idea how this happened. Once the hub is unlocked there is no more noise. I drove home for about 15 miles no problem at all.

I guess the clicking and popping i am hearing is not actually a broken birf, but a birf that is damaged and is close to breaking? If this sounds like a birf, should i wheel it until it breaks, or stop now and replace? Thanks for the help.

not a good idea I would take it apart. When they break they freeze up no more go for you. Plus changing them in a driveway/garage is much more pleasant than out on the trail.

mine have been clicking for like 9 months and i abuse the crap out of them i think the clicking is from the outer bell being worn out and flared. i broke an inner berore the birf gave out and i just broke something today don't know if it was a birf or inner yet. but all the same they are clicking on both sides and i wheel it. No reason not to wheel something that isn't completely broke.

btw, dont drive with a broken birf, i hope that is obvious.

check your steering stops also, when i had the zuke buggy (on toys) it was clicking on turns as I was steering further than I should be. Had I had any sort of HP id probably have broken somthing..

The strange part was, i did two complete circles at full steering lock in both directions, no popping. But as soon as i put any sort of load on the drivetrain, then it would pop. I went out to my buddy's farm Sunday and it didn't make a single noise all day, so who knows. When something breaks, i guess i will figure it out. Until then, the beatings continue.:D

My old welded Longs used to pop all the time...Never actaully broke the birfield...but when i finally took them out to be replaced due to the mushroomed ring....i noticed the cage had several hairline cracks in it. With the new Chromoly Longs...it hasnt been a issue yet.
