I broke a manifold bolt off in my truck. It broke about an 1/8" inside the block.Any ideas as to how I could remove it?Thanks,Daniel

drill it out and use and easy out?

or, there are some welding rods that don't adhere to cast, use some of that to weld on the head of a new bolt and back it out?

Don't bother with an easy out. They just break off. If it were me I would pull the head and take it to a machine where they could precisely drill it out.

I would cut into it with a cut off wheel and notch it. Then use a screwdriver bit with a socket wrench to unscrew it.

Pretty sure he doesn't want to "slot" his head in the process bro!

Thanks for all the tips. After removing the manifold,I have about an 1/8" sticking out of the block(actually the CAST ring on the block).I'm going to try and make a grove in the bolt and use a flathead to remove it(multiple advice)...hopefuly.Thanks,Daniel

best chance if you have a little sticking out is find a nut that will slip over the remains and mig weld it throu the center like a rosett weld and hold candle wax on it while its cooling so it will soak into the threads and then it should back out no problem.

This method works well for me also.

I'm still working on getting the bolt out and I've got good help coming tomorrow.

My new ? is what kind of material can I use to make a manifold gasket out of for this scout? The previous owner just installed a new gasket out of the metal type that's paper thin.It is blowing out at the two center ports on the manifold. The manifold has some wear and the heads do to.I'm planning on having the manifolds shaved a bit and cleaning up the heads with a wire wheel.Any suggestions on gasket material that will be a bit thicker to fill in low spots?
Thanks again,Daniel

I always like cork gaskets...and sometimes when there aren't flush surfaces, I'll double gasket...but that's worst case scenario

Will cork stand up to the heat? Thanks,Daniel

Shoot...my fault, I forgot this was for the intake. In that case, I like the FelPro Steel Laminate with printoseal gaskets...a little more expensive, but I like them. If you want a little cheaper, go with the FelPro Composite with Printoseal

I've had good luck with percy's manifold gaskets. They're the on;y thing that would seal the last three sets of hooker headers I've installed. As far as getting the bolt out, welding the nut on has worked for me in the past, and the guys in the shop at work have had good luck with the locktite freeze off or freeze out or whatever it is...

Thanks again for the advice.I still have not removed the bolt.I went and bought an EZ out and I bought a cobalt bit which is the strongest that lowes had to offer. It won't cut into the bolt...it just polished a 1/8" pilot hole. What are these bolts made of...kryptonite?Wish me luck...I need it.Thanks,Daniel

Well, xxxxxxxx!!!.I finally tried a product called grab it.Was doin pretty good until the head on the grab-it snapped off and filled in the hole I had worked so long on for a few days.I think the bit is some kind of pot metal(figures). Now my only option is to take off the head and have it machined out or get a local mechanic neighbor to try and blow it out with a torch....any opinions? Thanks again,Daniel

honestly welding a nut on the piece thats sticking out would prolly save ya alot of time instead of using other methods its worked for me on many many projects i break bolts on everythng!!! hope ya get it!!!!

I use the weld a nut on trick all the time at work
BTW I am ASE master tech welding a nut on also helps heat the bolt so it will loosen up .I do not use any easyouts or drill any manifold bolt if I can help it Last couple of times I have done that I ended up installing a thread sert in the head .

I don't have any pics at the moment but basically its sticking out of the head about
1/16".There is not enough to grab with vise-grips.The only thing I can think of is to hand it over to a real mechanic.I'll do that tomorrow and cross my fingers. As a note...always spray a bolt with break-free or something before trying to remove it...Thanks,Daniel
