Apparently one of the springs on our garage door broke. FML.
I've watched a few videos, it doesn't SEEM too awful. But I'm busy and not a fan of working on tightly wound things (yes, insert joke here).

How bad of a job is this? Wirth it to jus "pay a guy"?

Torsion or extension?

I just did a torsion and it was stupid simple. Just don’t stand under the winding sticks

Like I said in the other recent thread on this topic, it was well worth the $200 and pizza to have it fixed properly in an hour and get a warranty...all the while eliminating the risk of catching a spring through my chest.

Im typically a do it yourselfer, but I outsourced this without hesitation. I dont want to be beaten to death or impaled by a spring.

Definitely not a hard job. But for the price, it wasn't even close to worth my time. I paid $70 for the part and $100 for labor, and it came with a warranty.

It's easy until you screw up and a winding bar flings off and nearly impales you. Ask me how I know.

Another vote for "pay the man"

Torsion springs. 2 of them over the door.

The local guy recommended by everyone on the local FB page is $300 to replace 1, $400 for both springs. Yeesh.

... the outcome here may depends heavily on how things progress w/ my sudden A/C problems...
Why does this happen literally the same day I'm supposed to be setting a new tile floor into the bathroom, when I'm also preparing for an 8 day wilderness trek...?

Perseverance builds character and ultimately creates a story to tell to the troop of boy scouts I assume you're trekking with. Story can go something like ' you think life sucks now, just wait until you have to pay for it'

Northern Tier FTW.
I should probably start a thread on that. Just getting my body ready has been an ordeal in itself...

It’s not terrible, did mine a while back, didn’t have the “proper” winding bars, just used some extra long extensions, sketchy as hell, sweated bullets, and then didn’t wind the spring enough so door didn’t operate correctly and guess what, got to climb back up there and wind that mother some more.

And I bet the Door repairman will tell you best to get both springs, so the tension will be equal. This one broke, so how long do you think the other one will last? $$$ Now,it kind of makes sense, but I have no idea, if you Really need 2 new springs.
I do know, as the guy that installed my 2 doors, said, "That Winder can Kill you"!

Yeah......

I wont pay anyone to fix something I can "maybe" fix. Those springs are one of only 3 things I know of I will not touch.

Pay someone else to get killed doing it.....

It’s really not that bad. I ordered the spring kit that came with the winding stakes. Your door size determines how many twists. For mine it was like 36 twists on each. I never felt like they were gonna bust loose and destroy the world. It was controlled and a job I’d do myself again. It has the right amount of twists when your door balances in the middle. If it falls or goes up hard it has too much or too little. The springs will break in over time as well. I set my balance a little higher than center to account for break in. Never had an issue.
