I picked up a 84 chevy yesterday, every time I get a new to me vehicle. Basic maintance is the first thing I do when it gets home. Make long story short- went to change the oil got to the filter it wouldn't budge, so I tried one of the ratchet attachments, gator belt etc. I finally twisted but not what I wanted it to do, it twisted the walls and crunched in. Now I feel like a idiot, because after tearing it off I can't get the screw on filter part to move or anything.

What he said, or a strap style filter wrench at the very top of the filter, closest to the gasket end. That's the strongest part of the whole filter. It'll come off one way or another!

Don't think you guys understand. The threaded part of the filter that screws on the block, with the holes around the threaded pc. Is all that's left on there, but not even with a cold chisel the damn thing doesn't wanna move.

If I can't get it off, looks like i'll have to pay a tow truck + shop fee to get it off.

Gonna have to get some kind of small tool with a cutting wheel and plug the holes in the block and cut it off. Drimel with a flex extension? Idk best idea I got

I'd park it in a muddy water field and put a "for sale" sign in the window.
Your one of them smart cookies, I can tell. So how do you drive a truck that has no oil in it ? aint gonna get far before it locks up on ya .

And 2 how hard is the to imagine a torn down oil filter, with the threaded part still stuck on the block ?

why did you change the oil in a muddy water field?? hammer and a chisel will do it just gotta stick with it, i used to see this pretty often when i worked for chevrolet

scared to death!!!!!

I said it was sitting in, meaning it had been. I've been hammering and chiseling since last night, when I drove it home earlier that day. This is the first I've had that doesn't seem to wanna budge, and since I don't have a lift and my ramps don't raise it high enough. Not much swinging room got the oil pan in the front and the flywheel, torque converter right behind it. it's a 5.7L 350 first chevy I've owned.

Is this gonna be a common problem or did somebody just seriously over tighten it?

If the filter body twisted and tore you should now have access to the threaded body of the filter (in the center) that threads on to the oil filter adapter nipple. Grab it with some pliers and turn off from there...IF that is seized...you can dremel the remaining filter off and access the 2 screws that secure the oil filter adapter to the block and remove the whole adapter and work on it on a bench/vise.

Not that uncommon tbh

It's like it was rusted and not wanting to turn left for shit. Just ended up making a 4 pronged tool, welding on a bolt head and using an impact wrench to back it off.

I've done this before too. Tear off the entire body and insides of the filter so all that is left is the base plate with the seal against the block. Take a pair of beefy pliers or vise grips and lift the edge of the base plate on opposite sides. Pull them up as parallel as possible. This will break the seal and give you something to grab onto to turn it off.

Yeah if you can destroy enough of the filter, to unbolt the adapter. Like I said I just ended up making a 3 prong tool, welded a bolt head to the bottom, and used a ratchet to turn it off. Couldn't really get the truck high enough to swing a hammer w.o hitting myself or parts of the truck.
