last time I removed a broken windshield from my XJ, I made a huge mess. Any tips to reducing the mess? I was thinking taping the whole thing up with duct tape first, then trying to cut the urethane out.

Bingo thats it..

Sledge hammer

I used duct tape, and lots of it, last time I removed a busted window, helped a lot. I put the tape inside and out just to be sure.

but that's not fun! you gotta kick the crap out of it! lol

honestly sounds like you already have the best idea!

Got it out, fair amount of glass here and there, but cleanup looks manageable. I taped the thing inside and out, couldnt quite get the lowest 3-4" of the inside. Heated a 1" putty knife with a propane torch, was able to get started on the passenger side first. I also hammered a large flathead screwdriver thru a few spots to get started (ECORS rig...not concerned about body damage, or fitting new glass in). I taped the edges as I went, along the roof, down the drivers side. At this point I flopped the windshield forward, taped the lower/inside surface, and more hot putty knife, it was out.

I've never done it myself, but i've heard you can make a hole through the urethane, pass a wire, like a guitar string, through it and w one person in the cab and one out front, saw or pull the wire around the edge to cut it free. I imagine you would wrap the wire around a fat dowel or something to make a handle on each side.

That's a neat idea momucked I've done a few windshields but on older junk with a rubber gasket oh why did they ever stop using that awesome setup I mean a half trained monkey in a sweatervest could swap glass in a hour or two
