Anybody here done the BSA Northern Tier trek?
I hinted at this in other cd threads.... our troop has 2 crews going. For those unfamiliar, its a week of wilderness canoeing and portaging across the boundary waters in northern MN. Some crews take a seaplane into Canada, but we aren't that adventurous (yet). All map and compass guidance, no phones, gps etc.

Cant wait.... just boarded the plane...

My brother did it. He said it was amazing, except for the bugs. He said the bugs were so thick, they'd nearly carry you off. Naturally, we'll need a trip report when you get back. Have fun!

Drive over the Wisconsin border from MN and go to Hayward Outfitters (they're up in the upper NW corner of the state), and pick yourself up a blemished Wenonah canoe for a good discount while you're up that way. They're the clearing house for the Wenonah factory for blems and stuff like that.
Bring your wallet though, because they're still expensive even with a $500-900 discount.

Sounds like Maine.

Tried to put together a trip when I was SM....not enough interest. One of our parents had gone as a kid....said was the best trip of his life, and he had also done national jamboree, Philmont, Florida, etc.

Said skeeters was the only downside.

I know alot of people that have gone to the high adventure bases and worked at them. They all say they would deffinently do it again. It would be great trip that the scouts will remember for ever.

The only downside is the mosquitos coming in at night sounds like apache helicopters approaching. Hopefully you got one of the emergency sat phones that sends out a daily update of where you ae so that parents can follow along each day with map updates. We took a group of scouts 10 or so years ago and it was a great trip.

We chartered a bus to take us from Minneapolis to the base camp outside Ely. Boy is this waybout there, nothing but trees.

Boys discussing strategies w the SM

Yes I did boundary waters in scouts. Our trip was amazing. First time I saw a bald eagle and moose in the wild. We did one of the Canada options. We flew into thunder bay and drove to the camp in rental cars. Yes, the mosquitoes were ridiculous. We also got into leeches one day in the water; that wasn't fun either. The evening swimming was particularly fun. We also did something called "tarp saunas" where you heat rocks by the fire, carry them with shovels into a pile, and douse them with water while sitting under a tarp. You then go jump into the lake after getting a good sweat. Its a great way to refresh without access to a shower.

Ya'll will have a great time.

Just saw there were bad storms up that way, hope y'all faired ok.

Just leaving the base, limited cell access, will report more later.
But, yep, we were out there.... in the same lake, Knife, probably only a few miles from where this strike was. They took them back to the same BSA base we use at Moose landing.
We ate dinner sitting in the lightening strike position while it passed. We were really lucky and were just east of the worst if it.
