After going through two sets of spider gears in my rear 44 this month, i have decided to go with a locker and eliminate spider gears. What is a good locker that isn't going to cost me an arm and a leg? i am considering an aussie locker or lockright. whats the difference between the two? Has any one had any experience with the auburn high-performance limited slip?

if you are going through spider gears like that....one of two things is wrong. The set-up/install/oiling or you have two much motor going to a D-44. Just my opinion.

its a stock motor. 4.88 gears, 35" tires. the last time they broke, i was in 4-low 2nd gear, ging up a hill in the rain, keeping at around 1700 rpm it was going great and then it just popped. and stoped going up. i rolled back down and drove it back off the trail and had it towed. they keep shreading one gear and breaking the other in half.

i have run lockrights for about 5yrs no problems, dont care for the limited slip at all, they seem to always turn the tire you dont need....i would also say there must be some sort of other problem as well...i would install the LR and have the ring and pinion reset-up.
good luck!

i will see if i can convince the mechanic to reset the gears. i dont think i should have to pay for it if it wasnt done right, no one else i know has gone through spider gears that quickly.

Aussie is the only one for me. I have had lock rights and they break to many pins.....since I started running Aussie no more problems. Plus the price is awesome less than three hundred bucks with shipping.

Skip the Auburn, I ran one when My father insisted it replace a factory limited slip 14 yrs ago when he was paying the bill. You can adjust the clutches since its a cone driven limited slip for better action from the unit but its really not worth the extra set up cost for marginal performance. I've also ran Lockrites Detroit EZ lockers and full blown carrier Detroits. I prefer the last but I've broke several things instead of the Lockright while running them and so have my buddies. They are probably the most economical answer, however after a few sets of spider gear explosions I wouldn't doubt you have some carrier damage thats related to or causing your issues. A lockright relies on the center pin or cross pin to be within spec along with the related carrier if not it will effect how it operates. It has to do with the side loading effect from the axles and how it allows itself to engage and disengage. Carrier damage is just as bad as side gear wear on how they work.

I ran an Aussie in my front D44 for a long time and absolutely loved it. I know, a different application from a rear DD, but I just thought I'd mention it. It stood up to wheeling 36" TSL's on a full sized Bronco with a heavy footed driver for years. In my experience the Aussie has a smoother and quieter engagement/disengagement than a Lock-Rite does too, so that would be better in a DD. Combine that with the good price and I think it's the obvious choice.

if your going to have the gears setup again and you have had these failures with the spiders might be a good time to just invest in a full case detroit so that if the carrier is the problem it will be eliminated, that will at least get rid of one possibility and you will end up with a stronger axle all together.

Also, if your popping spider gears like that, when you put a locker in it you may be popping shafts, might want to look into some alloys.

ok so where can i get an aussie? my friend ordered his from dc4wd.com but it is closed now. i would prefer to get it overnighted, i kinda need a means of transportation.

Aussie's US distributor is:

That's where I got mine, I've run one in the rear D44 on my daily driver for about a year. I wish they would hurry up with a D60 locker, I'm gonna need one soon and would much prefer an Aussie. Hint hint, Aussie!

AUSSIE x10 stronger than lock Rite. Had both and changed to many pins on the Lock Rite, If you brake the Aussie they will replace it.
