Building a cage and looking for suggestions on DOM size

Guys,

I am in the process of designing/building a new cage for my TJ. I don't want to go the path of the GenRight and PoisonSpyder cages so I decided to build my own. Question I had is what size tubing is most common and most reliable to hold up in the event of a low speed flop or a couple-tumble roll. I am not a rock bouncer but where I am at in my wheeling is I am starting to take on more technical aka "outcome bad if you mess up your route"
Would 1.75 x .120 DOM be okay to use or should I look at 2 x .250?

I'm asking as I don't have the dies for the bender, so I need to figure out what to purchase. I'd like to keep the weight light so I'm leaning to the 1.75 but I want to survive a roll as well.

I've looked at a bunch of other links and the sizes has been all over the place. JD Squared who I am buying the dies from references 2" x .250 but I have seen build thread where people use 1 3/4 as well as 1 7/8... what is the norm for most cages for crawling? I'd appreciate any links, opinions or references to other info so I can make the right decision. Like I said I don't have a buggy so I am not going full throttle and bouncing any rolls would be slow induced (hopefully).

thanks!

used 1.75 .120 for my exo on my truggy. held up quite well to a nasty end over end. the cage was pretty trashed afterwards, but it did it's job and let me walk away.

The design o the cage and the gusseting is much more important than the tube size. 1/4" wall is way overkill. Like others have said 1-3/4" with .120 wall is normally used. It's also easier to find, a lot cheaper to buy, and a lot easier to work with.

Not sure which bender you plan on buying but if its a manual, you can throw the .250 or even .188 idea out the window lol. .120 on a manual bender is a ruthless work out in itself. If air/hrdro, disregard. Best of luck and cudos for going the custom route.

Ah did not consider the grueling bend of .250! I am going with a manual bender, JD Squared 32. I may upgrade later to pneumatic but initially I will just rely on good ol muscle to make the bends. Should make for an interesting new workout.

I have the jd2 model 3 manual and I've done about 300' of bending so far with .120 wall DOM. I'm no body builder by any means. It does the job and really makes you appreciate the measure twice rule

cbboatworks... you sir are what makes this forum awesome. I truly appreciate the offer. Hope to run into you sometime being were so close. We often make runs to Gulches, URE and the flats maybe we can get a group together this summer for some fun.
