Several years ago I built a wood fence at out home in the great state of Florida. To say the least it was a pain in the ass as they have a very strict building code for fences. I now need to build a fence at our house in Colfax. I have scoured the internet but can not find a code or requirements other than height and setback restrictions. I am looking to build a standard 4' tall picket fence and was planning on posts every 6'. So are there any requirements?

Building code is all IBC now, but fence is more likely covered under zoning or other local ordinance. Contact your local planning & inspections department.

Make an anonymous call to permits/zoning department and speak hypothetically and politely. It's amazing what answers you will get.

I have done it several times with great results :D

I've paid 2 different fence companies to build fence around my yard at 2 different houses in guilford county, one in greenboro city limits with summerfield address and one in stokesdale. Both were built within inches of the property line, and I'm 99.9% no permits were filed, etc. I asked the first one if there were any permits or surveys required, he told me something like as long as I told him where the property line was, we'll be fine, he'll handle the rest, which I was getting the impression that the rest equalled nothing else. Never had a problem. Both fences are 6ft wood picket fences, posts every 8ft or less depending on grade. I don't even think they ever came up in our property tax record. We sold the first house in 2005, everything was legit enough to sell.
