They were bonded shoes and seperated from backing plate. It wasnt terible, that wheel of brakes started locking up, which is interesting in the rain with locked diff. But got it sorted out and actually took it wheeling today and finished off some of the bushings

That's the bad thing about shoes on drums. Lots of shops told me that on occasion (cheaper shoes especially) they will come apart if you slam immediately on the brakes.

Its usually a defect, very worn or abused (ie ran hot, over adjusted etc) bonded shoes that seperate. These shoes were just worn and had been soaked by gear oil or brake fluid at a point in time. But new ones are on and shes stopping good now
Atleast you have your priorities in line! We had a good time. Nothing broke, just an overheated XJ one kid was beating on. We're going back Dec 7-9, bring this thing on out.
Tore into rear end to track down clunking noise. I knew axle bearings are bad so I have them on hand. But when I opened up the cover my heart sank. The p.o. thought it hade welded spiders and having peaked thru the fill hole I thought it so myself. Turns out it has a lunchbox type locker that had broken the pins and a section of one case half. Well at some point someone had welded the two halves together and now those welds have broken apart. So I reckon I'm going to pick up a spider gear set unless a dirt cheap locker pops up soon
