Our dog stays in the house when we are home, but he needed a house for when we are not home. I wasn't happy with any of the dog houses I saw at any of the local stores, so I decided to build my own. It has a large front porch, offset door to keep the wind off of him, ridge vent on the roof, and one side of the roof is hinged under the ridge vent so we can open the roof when we need to clean it out.
I'm thinking about adding insulation and some flaps over the door.

Thats cool. I always enjoyed building custom doghouses versus buying some of that crap they sell in stores. Here is one I built for my sister's dogs. I actually built it here in NC and delivered it to WV. Then when she moved, I drove to WV, picked it up, and took it to AR for her. It barely fit between the fenders on my trailer.

What? No permanent foundations? :D

I'd put a 1"x4" across the bottom of the doorway to hold in the shavings. But great job, I built a nice one too for my dog. Have pics somewhere...

Great quality.
Thats too small for a dog, maybe a rabbit lives there......

The heavy duty plastic strips like they use for walk in coolers and freezers in food places work well. I used them once but had to adjust them a bit. I had to cut the strips narrower so my dog would go through it.

I always add a light fixture inside. Install a 60 wat bulb. It will keep it nice and warm in cold night. The light never seemed to bother them at night.

Some NC counties legally require a roofed area for your pets to avoid bad weather. I built mine with a porch as well. It's crazy what the big stores charge for a large dog house.
