Well I had a day off work yesterday, and it really gave me a chance to do some reserch. I am building a truggy, so far I have a 87 Toy x-cab, rebuilt 302, np205, and some other small things. I plan on running somthing in the 40ish tire range. My original plan was to do 1 tons but with the 79 ford D60's getting harder to find (was actually hoping to run across on sitting in somones back yard " yea I know dream on") I started looking at Yota axles b/c I am already very familar with them. So I found that a 60 will set me back around $1000-1500, and posibly still have to get steering arms and such, and a Yota axle with 30 spline longs is around $850 (one in FS section right now) The longs claim to be just as strong as a D60. I know I would have to flip the Yota axle, but is it worth the work? So what do you guys think, Pros, Cons?

The motor is just a stock reguild on propane, around 300-350hp. Not a full body just the cab.

Sounds like a lot of motor and tire for Toyota 8 inch ring and pinion gears to handle. I'd go with tons. What transmission are you running?

yota axles with that motor = lots of trail repairs....even with heattreated ring gears. I am sure there are people that will say run them...but i was blowing up 4.10 (V6, 4cly, and highpinion) with a 22re. Although i was kinda hard on the truggy when i had it.

I am going to be running yota axles on my buggy...because they are great....but i am going to have a honda power 140hp moonbuggy.....little different.

I'll probly just keep looking for tons till I find some that I want to pay for. Just getting tired of looking I guess, thought maybe I'd look into something else. I'll be running a C6 tranny.

Tons.

^^^He's runnin 38's and I believe even the stock 60 will need a fair amount of upgrades. Then its that problem of finding one unless you got deep pockets for a Dana trac unit.

You are going to want something other than just a 205 for a TC if you are running a C6. Might want to consider a 203/205 doubler. Northwestfab currently has their kit on sale for $625 and a guy on this board has a 203 in the for sale section.

Yea I thought about "rockdubs" but what kind of ground clearance am I looking at with 40's?

I'm pretty sure that rockwells and 60s are like 1" different in GC.

The yota axle for $850 is as stong as it can get. It may be as strong as a stock D60. The difference is that if you need more you can put chomoly shafts and the 60 and make it even stronger.

shaved...about like a D44...clearence isn't what you need to be worried about with rocks...it's weight. my buggy weighs around 3500 lbs with a 60 and a 9"....Pherry's buggy with pretty much the same weight everywhere except the axles weighs 4200-4300....that's an extra 700-800 pounds to sling up the trail. He doesn't break stuff though.

Course he doesn't ride much either...:flipoff2:

i havent looked lately but on pirate.com i've been seeing rockwells for around 1200 for a set, their still some folks think their gold but if not in a hurry can find them cheaper than danas

I have ran toyota stuff for years tried and true believer in the product. However your setup will just frustrate you with ring and pinion failures. The 8 inch is a great package for 150 hp and down with really light weight, but for v8 and close to a full body rig to survive you would have to be relitively easy on it. i see you eventually busting ring gears.. I have done a few rear steer setups with the toyota axles(the same amount of work to get driver drop out of one). IN my experience it is a lot of work(doing it right)to still have issues with the ring gear.. if you are serious about toyota stuff look into cruiser housings... Just my 2Cents.

a stock 302? puts out 195-215 horsepower depending on the year.

i think 37's is about the max for toy axles.

If your looking for easy, rockwells are out. I went that route when i was looking for easy. obviously, the project never got finished. of course, that was back when i didnt know a thing about building a good truck. lol, now that i know, i wouldnt of bought them in the first place.

i vote 60's.
