OK, so we are putting in an offer on that land today. Best case scenario I need to make about 100ft of road. Worst case scenario I need to make about 1100ft of road. I have no problem with a bulldozer, I have worked one before. Does anyone know where I could rent one cheap in Raleigh/Wake Forest? Or do you think it would be best to just buy one and then sell it when I am done?

This land is so awesome, I am so excited about this, my wife and kids and I went out and walked it today, reminede me of my grandfather's land when I was growing up.

So damn excited, 5 acres of my own. :)

Congrats!

Hertz on Capital Blvd. or similar... we've rented a dingo, not sure about a bulldozer.

Dingo ate a bunch of red clay in my back yard. ;)

Graders are probably hard up for money right now due to slow construction. You could probably get it done cheap.

Just hire it done. It will probably be cheaper than renting when it's all said and done. Unless you have alot more dozer work than the road I wouldn't buy one cause it will be hard to resell in this market plus if you have my luck you will have to put a motor or a pump in it before you can sell it.lol

Buy one! Thats what I did over 4 years ago when I bought my land, and I still use it once or twice a month at my place. Plus doing work for friends has more than paid for the maintenance on it (but fortunately it has been very low maintenance). Then there's the satisfaction of having a bulldozer, which is unquantifiable. I've got a Komatsu D21, which is small enough to drag around behind a 3/4 ton truck, and works great for grading and patient clearing.

I know, my grandfather had a big CAT dozer when we were growing up and that thing came in handy SO many times. That's how I learned to drive one.

I also need to take down a lot of trees to make room for the house, so wondering about calling a logger. I know a friend of mine was building a house over in Kernersville and the log guy came in, built a log road back to the area and then cleared it. Buddy made some money off of it too. All he had to do was skim it with a bobcat and spread out some crush and run and he had a road.

Congrats man! I'll never forget pulling up to my land the day that we closed.

Nice looking lot. It also appears to be mostly hardwoods. If I was you, I would take down all the pines when you clear for the driveway and house.

Maybe look for a surveyor/grader to do both at the same time... because if you don't have a survey you are going to want one to help with siting the house and with construction.

I see enough pines in the picture to get a "short logger" in there to cut a bunch for you.
Ask round for who has a 10wheel boom logging truck. Those gusy will eat up that track and put some money in your pocket.

I hauled 1 big pine and 2 small-medium pines to the sawmill. Left with $170. I'll be doing that again.

I have been in the market for one the past few months but have not found exactly what i want. Matt has the setup, and i want to copy it. Towing it with a 1ton truck is the only way i can make it reasonable to own. My brother wants to go big and just leave it at our property (D8-9), but i cant see that being reasonable.

BTW, i was VERY impressed with Matts D21 when he graded for Josh's shop.

Thanks man. The ole D21 has done way more work than we ever expected, and been super reliable. You've gotta work it a little to push over big trees, but for 9000lbs and 40hp, its a beast.
