Buy a rack for the TJ...or?

Im going to be purchasing a kayak sometime in the coming months. Ive been looking at various rack systems, and think I might go with the Kargo Master Congo system....It'll probably run me close to 500 to get this rack on.

So Ive kind of been thinking....is it possible to buy a truck or cheap XJ, and insure it enough to JUST use it to get to the lake/river and back for around the same amount?

if you put a xj on top of your tj, you're still gonna have to buy a roof rack for the xj.
I would put a truck on the tj, and stick the boat in the bed of the truck.;)

I dont know if you can get them to fit on a TJ but I LOVE my Thule Hull-a-port! I got it brand new, unopened for $100 off ebay. my 18 foot kayak fits like a dream in it!

edit: I wasn't quite thinking right, it'd be hard to mount the hull-a-port through your top. But buying a car just to transport a boat doesn't sound like a good idea...

buy one of those $200 trailers from harbor freight. thats what i plan on doing.

Seems reasonable, but I dont have a hitch on my TJ yet, and didnt really plan on buying one.

I think I'll go with the kargo master though. It'll fit the Yakima roller system so all I need to do is get the bow up into the rollers and push from the stern...cant be too hard yeah?

Aren't you a poor college kid?
Finding room for and dealing w/ 2 cars while in college will be a pain, not to mention the extra pain of maintaining said extra vehicle.
There is NO such thing as an "only $500 car".
Aside from the cost - IF you can find something that is driveble for that, it will be another $120 just for title. Then insurrance, minimum liability, will be like another $120/year, plus taxes, registration... and any vehicle in that price range will be needing $$ to keep it going.
No way in hell that's worthwhile just to cart a kayak around!
Remember the imfamous $30 XJ? That cost me > $250 just to be able to drive to/from the race, plus insurrance. (no complaint, just making a point!)

I'd either
(1) buy a cheap-ass trailer,
(2) get one of those over-the-outside racks (maybe this is what costs $500), or even better
(3) get a nice exo-cage made for your TJ, just attach kayak to that. Now you have the cage you were asking about awhile ago AND a solution for the boat.

I figured the vehicle might be a bad idea...just wondering. Ive got parking here at the apartment (theres a guy who has a truck here he NEVER drives...constantly drives his motorcycle...even now in 30 degree weather)

Exo-Cage wont work...my jeep is a rag top, and I still like to take the top off.

Definitely going with the Kargo Master, with the Yakima rollers attached...

Should run me 450 or there abouts though...oh well.

just do what we used to do on my buddies pathfinder. Ratched strap it through the windows. Crank it dwn until the roof dents so it wont slide around.

BUt i guess with a soft it wont be denting much
