If I wanted to rent a Porsche in Germany for one day and cruise it down the autobahn it's going to cost a kidney and my first born child.....

I saw on top gear once where Jeremy and the boys paid less than $1000 euro to BUY older exotic cars. Apparently the taxes get so high on older cars that the value significantly depreciates the car.

Thoughts on what if I found something for -$1000 and sold it in the same week?

Who would pay the taxes?

How would I do title work?

Any help or website links "in English" would be greatly appreciated.

The first question that comes to mind is whether an older exotic car you buy for $1000 will actually be reliable to drive around, right off w/o having to do anything to it to make it safe esp for Autobahn kind of speeds. Obviously you want to invest a total of $0 in this car. E.g. can you really find a plug 'n play car that is is the kind you are looking for.

Then the question is, in Germany what are the rules re: driving w/ titles for a just-purchased car. Obviously you don't want to wait around for a fresh title. Maybe they have a 10-day temp tag you can get, and you can leave the title "open" to just transfer to the next guy...

Also note, It's not every autobahn that has limitless speeds. Only select few. Most Do in fact have speed limits.

how much could it really cost to rent a car that can run 150mph+. I'm sure you can rent a BMW. I've been 255km in a BMW in Germany in a 1985 525i BMW. It was pretty cool!

I went over for work a few years ago, they payed for my car so i was stuck with a Toyota cammry. I don't remember the kph but I remember converting and it was roughly 130 mph. I drove from Frankfurt to Rotweill ( 3-4 hours at that speed ) there was a few sections through big cities that had 100 kph limits. It was the nicest trip I've ever driven.

The Toyota was about 200 euro for 7 days. I think a decent BMW was around 800. A Porsche was over 1000 euro. And that was about 8 years ago. And then fuel was over 5 euro a gallon.

Autobahn basically is there word for Interstate. There are slow parts and unrestricted parts, but people have a lot more reverence for the left lane, so its alot easier to roll throttle and not let off.

I talked to a few guys over there. It cost a few $100 to get a licenses. It is illegal to drive in the left lane unless you are passing. If you lose your license it is more expensive to get back.

I drove 4 hours one way and never had to slow down for a slow poke. The left lane was always open. You pass and right back to the right lane. Its sweet.

2 things to keep in mind....people in Europe treat their cars like CRAP. Do NOT buy one near any larger city, because you can bet its been run into the ground.

One other thing, not sure if its done in Germany, or anywhere else for that matter, but when I spent time in Bulgaria, our tour driver needed to pull over every 4 hours or so and take a 15 minute break. Apparently that is the limit of how long you can be driving without a break. He said that the police can plug into your car and see how long its been running and will write you a ticket if its over 4 hours.

You might even look at buying in Poland or the Czech Republic, and driving it into Germany. Might be cheaper that way.

Wouldn't that just be for CDL?

The greatest thing about the autobahns is that left lane squatters don't exist. If you don't move over for faster traffic they can call the police, report you and they will show up at your house and ticket you. We ought to do that here.
