My girl wants a new tower for her comp. I bought her a nice Monitor for Christmas, but her computer is about 8 years old and since this weekend is tax free..she wants to get a new tower...I don't know that much about computers, but what is a good tower to get? She is wanted to spend around the $400-500 range...I know that isn't much, but she doesn't need anything too fancy...she just wants something with some speed...any brands to stay away from? I wish I could talk her into getting an Alienware...but I know that ain't gonna happen

Get one built. I had one built about 3 years ago that was faster and had more features than anything best buy had. Cost me $450.00. Plus you don't get all the BS software. You can pick what you want.

x2 on getting one built but I would stay away from Alienware since it's basically just an expensive Dell XPS ( Dell bought Alienware ). If you just wanted a knock around computer that did email and internet any off the shelf computer will work for her. Right now all of the brands are pretty much the same and last about the same amount of time. You just have to find one that has the specs you want her to have and get it. The computers I have at work start at $369 and go to $469. If you decide to have one built you'll spend more money but you definitely get a much better computer that will last you a lot longer.

I also agree with building one. I have built my last 3 computers myself, and then one for a friend and one for my inlaws.

I live in Apex and work in Raleigh, if you decided to go the custom built route I would be willing to help you with that.

Yeah if youre in gboro hit Intrex, they'll offer support for it also, and you'll get way more bang for the buck.

if you're going with windows get the 64bit version of seven, and put a heap of memory in the PC.

I run dual monitors, play games on one watch a movie on the other while downloading stuff and the pc doesn't even blink.

If you have the skills to build one you will almost always do better that way. If not then I would look in the Dell outlet for a refurb or scratch and dent unit. We have bought more than a dozen of them at the office over the last year or so and all of them have been great (including 2 servers).
