I bought one of my jeeps from SC took title back in march to put in my name, just realized a couple days ago that the title never came back. So i call down there and they say that i should have received a form and information to contact an inspector (I never received this form nor any of this info given to me) So she gives me the number to contact the inspector, but she could not tell me what the inspection involved. I have called the number for the inspection place 4 times with no answer and have left a message.

Does anyone know what they inspect for?
My concern is that it may be a safety inspection, it is a project, not running or drivable so it would not pass a safety.

I'm guessing its an older vehicle? They started that a few years back to address some shady dealings with some DMV folks. The inspector is mainly checking to see that said vehicle is said vehicle and not you slapping the vin/title on something else..

IMHO you should be ok with it being inspected as is. This isn't the safety inspection (unless your trying to put plates on it also? ) This is an inspection simply to allow the title transfer or not. You can deal with the safety part down the road..

Either way you're not gonna know until you call....

yepp it is an older model, 1972. and not wanting to do plates just title transfer. Aparantly the inspectors are the most difficult people to get a hold of 5 calls in three days and two meesages and no answer or call back

I did exactly this. I bought my 74 CJ-6 in Alabama with a Florida title. I took the title to the local DMV office to just get it in my name without plates and got all the details. Any vehicle older than 35 years that has an out of state title requires this initial inspection. After this there is no more inspection in NC. When the vehicle is road ready you contact the local DMV officer. He/she will come to your location and inspect the vehicle. It must start, run, drive and stop. All the lights, wipers, belts, and horn must work and the tires need to be legal. If the vehicle does not do these things you can opt for a non-op title but you will have to do it all again when/if you are ready to put it on the road. If you do that the DMV officer must list and photograph all parts. My DMV officer recommended against it for a vehicle that will eventually be made road worthy. He told me I have 1 year from date of title application to complete this inspection. If not they will mail the old title and paperwork back to me and I would just reapply when ready. This info came directly from my DMV officer. Also they dont do phone calls. You have to go to the office to set an appointment with them. If you want yours titled to you in its current condition, then you are stuck going to a non-op title.

Well I got in touch with one of the inspectors yesterday, he is going to try and be out next week. H told me they would just be checking to make sure it is not wrecked, that it is a complete vehicle and that the VIN matches the one on the title I sent in. He said that it doesnt need to be in a running/driveable state, just appear that it would. I.e. no flats all lights in place all glass etc
