C6 and 205 questions

The C6 in my Bronco has seen better days, I was planning on having it rebuilt soon, but got a killer deal on one that supposedly was rebuilt 5k ago (I know this guy and believe him). If it is a junk trans, i can make my money back at the scrap yard. However, it's been sitting for a couple years in the guy's shop. Anything I should touch or inspect before I throw it in? Should I use the torque converter that came with it? I'm a tranny dunce, so help is appreciated.

Part 2...the 205 will be coming down as well. It functions well, but seeps fluid. I was figuring since it's gear driven not much to wear, and seals should be all that need replacing. I've never rebuilt one, but think I can handle wrenching one if more than seals are needed. It's a 35 year old case, so suggestions while it's out are appreciated.
 
If all holes have been plugged or taped up, change front pump seal. Drop pan and change filter, also allowing you to look for shavings and chunks. As far as the converter, I would put a rebuilt converter in it. You don't know how long it's been covered up or if it is covered up. Dirt Dobbers like to build in ANY hole they can find.

Where is 205 seeping from? If it is from the output's just change the seals and go. If it's from shifter linkage, about normal, if it just leaves a small spot over night, let it ride, unless you are OC, then rebuild it all and paint it up nice and slick
 
Thanks...outputs are weeping on the 205...nothing puddle worthy, just witness marks of dampness. So seal replacements it is.

The C6 I was hemming and hawing with going with a new converter. Simply because I didn't want to drop more on converter than I did the trans if the trans was garbage, then I just fubar'd a perfectly good tc. But the same is true in reverse...don't want to trash a good trans if the converter is junked up. I saw I can get reman units in the 16-2100 stall range for about $100 from O'Reilly's...or I can stockish replacements from Boss Hog or TCI for $150-200. I guess I'd rather gamble a couple hundred than a $1000 rebuild.
 
The 205 is easy to tear down and put back together. Biggest gotcha are the detent balls in the shift rails -- they're spring-loaded and will go sailing if you're not careful.

This is the way I'd do it. I'd pull the pan before you bought it just to inspect it.

2 C6's that were in running trucks 2-3 years ago, for the price I got them...it wasn't worth the time to look. Like I said, if I decide to scrap both of them, I'll double my money. But yeah...the pan is coming down. I was planning on a TransGo stage 2 and drilling for a drain plug and welding a nut to the inside of the pan.
