c6 rebuild

thinking of attempting to rebuild an old C6 tranny ive got out back...never rebuilt a tranny but i hear the c6 is a very simple tranny is this a hard feat? would love some suggestions about the rebuild if im able to tackle it myself or would i be better off taking it somewhere?
 
of all of the tranny's out there, a c6 is a good place to start.

what year is the c6? if it is an early model they can be a little bit of a pain in the ass(having to stack springs)
do you have a spring compressor for the direct drum? if not you will need one.

im not exactly what year the tranny is. how can i find out? it came out of a 73 ford f100 but dont know if that was original or not. and no i dont have a spring compressor can you pick those up for pretty cheap?
