Ive got a 1990 xj with a 4.5 inch lift and im about to regear it so i can put some 33 12.50s on it. I have heard the horror stories of regearing the dana 35 and the strength of the axle itself being that its not so good. I was told that a simple upgrade to a C8.25 rear end would beef it up a bit, and it bolts right up.
So i got one from a local junkyard. But i also got the driveshaft with it. Do i need to use this driveshaft or the stock one i have now hooked up to the dana 35? I didnt know if there was a difference in length or anyting. I plan on getting a new cv driveshaft and SYE but thats a little further down the road.
Anything helps! Thx!

Use the driveshaft that you got with the Chrysler 8.25. There is a difference in length, not a big difference but it is about an inch or so. Also did the Jeep you got the axle and driveshaft out of have the same transmission as you? Manual Cherokees have a longer driveshaft than automatics.

sounds like you're on the right track, and the driveshaft info above looks good. Now you just need some larger U-bolts, and you might get hung up by the U-bolt plates. It would have been easiest if you grabbed the U-bolt plates from the donor axle, because I believe in 1990 the plates are sized only for the D35 (later XJ's have slots for that will fit both axles).

One minor issue you could run into is if you have ABS brakes...you will no longer have them in the rear, and the dash light might be on.

So about the regearing part...Im going with 4.56's and i found a website called Randys ring and pinion. Has anyone had experience with these guys. It seems like alot of people are either very satisfied or really disappointed by them. thx:beer:

Give the guys at East Coast Gear Supply a call, you won't be disappointed. 919-672-2705 They are located in Durham and more than likely have exactly what you need sitting on the shelf.

Yep. Every transaction I've ever had with ECGS was a good one. Their prices and customer satisfaction cannot be beat. Shipping was crazy fast too.
