Well I spent a lot of thought on this (not really).
I see alot of kids down here mostly around the Johnston county area with Straight pipes on their trucks .My big question is WHY?
It does not help performance or fuel mileage .I also find it very annoying when a truck goes by and you can here it going CLACK,CLACK from the exhaust . I would like to know who thought this was cool and what exhaust shop are violating the law . When I worked for Meineke I would not straight pipe a vehicle .

they might be doing it themselves.... not my cup of tea. I'll be putting an exhaust on my WJ jeep soon, but that is for performance reasons. right now it sounds like a station wagon too which isn't cool from a v8... definitely not straight piped, or anything obscene, just what you would think a big v8 should sound like

I think most V8's should have a slightly aggressive tone but not this

that's what it will most likely end up like, either one of those mufflers, but the straight pipes are just obnoxious. Not so much on the roads as when the idiots gun them at night in residential neighborhoods. That's just rude. I know one of my neighbors fine the bejeezis out of some guy who would come flying thru the neighborhood at 130 in the morning 4-5 nights a week after he dropped his gf off. Cops had a field day with that one as it was loud enough to violate noise codes. They were perched on the front porch with a decibel meter.

You should be old enough to know that straight pipes have been around forever......

Ok, I'll do it, you're old!

The exhaust you did on my cj still sounds good. Though taking the hedders off has been an overheating nightmare.

You talking gas or diesel trucks? My diesel has a straight pipe, no muffler no cat no nuthin.... just straight..... I did it cause I wanted too... I think it sounds good.

Well, to be honest, on a long wheel base truck, I like the sound of the straight pipes. Bigger exhaust pipes and flow masters, I like better.
Comparatively, my jeep has a single exhaust and one flow master. sounds decent. On a trail rig, all day wheeling with a loud exhaust does give me a headache!

diesel trucks with straight pipes have a good sound, but I must be getting old too because I now prefer my 7.3L with 5" exhaust and a big honkin muffler. Still has the tone and turbo whistle but won't wake the entire neighborhood when leaving.

Gas trucks with straight pipes are stupid loud. When I bought my Z71 it was straight piped with true dual exhaust and no crossover pipe. Talk about freakin obnoxious. I felt terrible every time I pulled out of the driveway. It didn't take long for me to have a stock type muffler put on it. Now it sounds good but not stupid loud.

Basically, I'm getting old too.

Does it have a turbo? They do a good job muffling the exhaust.

Yeah, it's a turbo diesel. 7.3 PSD. I like the whistel out the tail pipe and the throaty sound. I try to be respectful with it tho That is unles somebody pisses me off.... the it's loud and smokey.....

I prefer the walk softly and carry a big stick approach. Silent killer...

x2

In addition, I must be getting old, because after wheeling all day, I am ready for a nice quiet ride home in the tow rig.

Some real exhaust noise~

Go to the Drug Store and get yourself an old fashioned red hot water bottle. Clamp it on the tail pipe of a unsuspecting target with a radiator hose clamp. It sounds like a small bomb going off! We used to put them on the local cop car while they were eating in a resturant. Lots of fun for a young, growing, juvenile deliquent!
I fire up the 57 Chevy every once in a while and go hunting for noisey ricers and coal burners. The look on thier face is priceless when they figure out that a 54 year old car just handed thier ass to them.
"Whuts in that thang"?!!
"Plenty".

Yup, I do not miss that part of living in Raleigh. Straight pipes/glasspacks were sooo much more common there than around here, and get worse the farther you go towards the coast it seems.

My brother in law was figuring out exhaust for his restored 68 F-100, of course being 16 and his first truck he was wanting the loudest thing possible, finally I was able to talk him into something reasonable after pointing out did he ever hear me bring his sister in after curfew during highschool? No? Exactly.

nice post buddy. but straights arent bad as long as it sounds good and is done right. i had cat back straights on my 05 and it sounded pretty good in my opinion. personally its my vehicle and ill do whatever suits me. i have a cherokee that you couldnt hear coming up. ive also had a damn loud 86 chevy. as long as it sounds good it shouldnt matter but i dont think everyone should be cutting the pipe right up close cuz short exhaust with no mufflers sounds like :poop: oh and wheeling with a straight piped vehicle sucks. in neighborhoods is understandable. a buddy of mine had some neighbors pay him to fix his exhaust hahahaha. wish mine woulda done that. but nobody said anything about my trucks cuz they actually sounded good. loud or not.

soo warren idk if its cuz ur old. i think its just cuz kids are broke and cant do it right. haha.

i turn 20 in less than 2 months.

you know, i think people just want loud shit - and most of the time the assumed equation is LOUD = POWR.

and it do not.

My buddy has a V10 F-350 crew cab long bed with straight piped true duals. That truck is extremely loud and obnoxious and doesn't sound good. He's always catching hell from me since it'll sound like he's trying to floor it and its barely moving
