alright, 1990 4runner, auto v6 driving down the road and get off at the exit and nothing, its like its in neutral, car wont go, just revs, tried low, reverse, drive nothing. get it to a lot, now there was no noise, pop, or nothing. trans fluid looks good, no burnt smell, or look. get to checking, now with trans case in high 2, or high 4 it wont move at all, but in 4 low it drives normally, and the trans shifts like it should thru all the gears, test after test its fine in 4 low, this leads me to believe that trans is partly ok, could it be trans case not engaging in 2 high. any help would be appreciated. not sure what to do with this. need to get it fixed, daily driver for the kiddies. thanks

When you have it "working" in 4 lo - is it actually behaving like it is in 4lo? E.g., front driveshafte engaged, low gear ratio etc?

yes, it is behaving correctly, and will shift thru all the gears, so its a little odd to me. jeep easy fix, but i dont know alot about toyota. its like the trans case wont let it engage, when i crawled underneath, as soon as it hits 2 or 4 hi, its disengages the driveshafts altogether.

unfortunately for you, this transfer case is integral to the auto tranny... I guess you coudl technically seperate them, but they aren't really intended to. it definitely sounds like something has let go inside the TC though.
Lets see, on the TC stick, it has neurtral between 4hi and 4lo, right? So if you are going from 4lo -> neurtral -> 4hi, is it like it just never gets out of the neutral?

check your linkages good. but does sound like something inside the tcase broke.

swap in a 5seed i got one for you with flywheel, clutch pedal assembly, master and slave cylinder with the lines, all the interior pieces to make it look factory.

on the stick there is just 2hi, 4 hi, and 4 low there is no neutral on it at all, and linkages look good, engages on 4 low, but as soon as you take it out, the driveshaft disengages. very puzzling to me. is it electronic, maybe a sensor. clueless on this, but trans, and trans case makes no noise whatsoever, nor did it when it quit working.

I believe the internals on this one are hydraulic, not electric. Not positive though.

cperry - don't you need the ECM for that swap too? I know there is some funkiness there b/c the dash is wired differently for 5 spd vs A/T.

only differenc in ECM is auto ecu have different timing maps to help the auto have more power actually run better w/ an auto ecu.

As for the tranny issue, basically your issue is the rear output is not turning in 2h 4i, because it does turn in 4lo it can be inferred that the tranny output is in fact turning when in drive in 2hi, 4hi 4lo, to check this for sure you would nneed to remove t-case and watch tranny output, so if tranny output is turning then when it gets to t-case something is lost it is a mechaincal failure probably in the linkage could be internal linkage. we could theroize all day about what has gone wrong but no one could really know without opening it up.

I'll interperet:
"start looking around for a replacement transmission/case and get ready for a headache".

that you for interpretation, so basically i have a big paperweight in my yard. wonderful. anybody on here that can fix it, and at a reasonable rate

ill put a 5 speed in it For $700 includes new clutch, tranny labor ect.

ill open it up for you also see if it can be fixed resonably, however you fix the t-case and 6 months from now the torque converter will take a shit or something else in the auto will go bad.
