Looking at acouple different toyota pickup trucks and one in peticular I like Im not sure if its a good idea to dd it or not. 89' reg cab lifted on 38 and a halfs 5.29 gears and solid axle swap hi steer kit and spool in the rear. Can something like that be driven daily or is that asking for something to break?

Not out of the realm of possibility to dd it, but also not a commuter car... it's got 38s! If you haven't had a dd that is spool in the rear you may want to rethink it. As long as the whole thing hasn't been cobbled together, it should not "break". Normal stuff will go wrong, depending on mileage and maintenance.

Spool = Welded

If it is desirable to have a spooled axle, the better option is to install either a mini-spool, which uses the stock carrier and replaces only the internal components of the differential, similar in installation to the lunchbox locker, or a full spool which replaces the entire carrier assembly with a single machined piece. A full spool is perhaps the strongest means of locking an axle, but has no ability to differentiate wheel speeds whatsoever, putting high stress on all affected driveline components. Nothing is welded using a spool, just acts the same when turning a corner.

Nothing about the 38/5.29/spool combo that says "no DD" but it's not gonna be a comfy or quiet ride.
The more important question is how it's all put together, if it will be reliable or not.

You will hate life if you dd that, underpowered on 38s with a spool will suck t total balls.

Never drove a DD with a spool, But I do DD my 95 22re toyota with 4.10s and 37s. I dont use 5th gear. At all. But there is nothin like a beat to piss toyota on big meats rollin down main street and gettin the "What on Earth" look from all the sweater vest wearing people walking down the side walk.

biggest problem with I see with DD'ing that setup is buying tires all the time. I dont know of a tire made that will last any kind of miles in a 38.5. Tire prices are high and would add up fast.

I'm no expert but I thought spools or welded lockers were not for street driving. I would think driveing at road speeds, in the rain, around curves, compression breaking, or down hill turning, would be exciteing or something.

Some 35 ats would be great. I would recommend ditching the spool if you want to dd it. Stuff those gears in an e-locker third if you want the best of both worlds.

Except note - you can't use the same gearset, the only E-lockers for Yotas are for the 96+ trucks and have a larger ring gear than the 80-95 trucks... so swapping to E-locker will also mean buying new gears unlessy ou can find one already geared. But you could always sell that 5.29 third to make up teh difference.

Are v6 gears the same as the elocker or no? Either way an elocker is nice, instant traction with a press of a button.

Not if it's a V6 from a pre-96 truck. You have to get a gearset for a truck te hsame vintage as the E-locker, which is 96-2000-something
