I have a 2000 Grand Cherokee 4.0 with a busted block, and I have a 1987 engine from a Cherokee. My question is will the short block from the 1987 work in the 2000? It would appear that everything will work the question is the crankshaft. thanks in advance for all the help.

In my opinion you are best finding an identical block. There are motor mount differences combined with accessories mounted differently on the front serpentine belt.

Short answer is...no.
The WJ engine will have cast in motor mount bosses in a deifferent location than the early 4.0

There's some other issues but that one is a biggie.

I have a good running 4.0 from a 99 xj for sale. If you're interested shoot me a pm. Located in Lincolnton.

Iirc, 99xj has different motor mount locations from the wj.

Quoted from above posted link

99-04 Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ 4.0L
99-04 WJ, 00-06 TJ - 2002 and up were TUPY heads and did not have the cracking problems that earlier 0331 heads had. 02+ are recommended.

I said was for sale, not that it would fit. One needs to do their own due diligence..;)
