Dude here in Louisiana has a 1980 Toyota short bed 4x4 for sale. No title but I’m working on the solution. Had ran recently but gas tank needs replaced due to rust/ sediment issues. Says it has a 22r. Questions: is a 22R a stock option for this year, where do I look for rust issues. I’m looking at a decent wheeling rig but nothing serious (for now lol). Educate me on what I should look for prior to purchase. Also, what would it take to do away with the gas setup and go propane? Is propane feesable for street use if I chose to Road drive it from time to time? Btw duder is asking $750. Worth it?

Yes, $750 is worth it. Propane isn’t street legal. Rust is usually in the bedsides right where those two colors meet.

Look for rust around the rear spring hangers also. Propane swap is stupid easy if you buy a kit from gotpropane. I drive mine on the street with propane and go by my mileage. As far as I know propane is legal for street use, but that's an antique and shouldn't require inspection anyways.

Do it. Body looks straight but a few rocks could fix that. In most cases of a Toyota that old, the beds are a lost cause. Frame would really be the determining factor. I love the propane on my 22R, but count on being in a good propane kit about 750. You could probably find a Webber carb and a cheap fuel cell for under 350. But you'll realize the limitations of the Webber if you really decide to wheel it.

It has a Weber now but yes, I have heard the woes of the Weber so I’m figuring make life easy and go ‘pane. I figure it would be the way to go. Idk yet until I get better pics from the seller as to frame condition. Hopefully get pics tomorrow and I’ll go from there.

Any reply if a 1980 Model could have a 22R from the factory. I have had a couple yota’s but they were 22re’s and it was years ago when I was in high school. Changed gears to Jeep and haven’t looked back. This has piqued my interest though and for the money, why not.

Ye ol internet says 22R was available in 81 to 97. I figure that truck probably came with a 20R and the 22R might have been swapped in. There's a thread on here about the street legality of propane. Bunch of mumbo jumbo about finding a station with "street taxed" propane. I just hate the smell. Had one and can never go back.

That’s what I have read before about the years /engine options. I haven’t inspected it yet but I’m wondering if it is a late model ‘80 and has the 22r for 81 Model year. Either way still a ways to go before it’s mine but if it is solid it may just have to happen regardless.
