im looking to go tent camping with some buddies for our spring break in a few weeks. the main thing we are looking for is a place to do some fishing and maybe some hiking towards the mountains somewhere. anybody have any suggestions?

South mountains is nice, or go about 30 minutes more up the road and hit the Linville Gorge wilderness. Its beautiful and tough, but worth every bit. Me and two buddies went over Christmas break and it was awesome, but cold and not very green.

The Linville Gorge wilderness area is a great place. But, due to the flood we had about a year and a half ago, it is not easily traveled. Very few trail markings. And some very rough country. Every year we hear about some hikers getting lost in there. (Usually from Florida) You do have to have a permit to hike/camp there. The South Mountain State Park has wonderful trails, well marked. and Primitive only camping. And some awesome scenery.

i've done the whole camping durning spring break thing. yea it is fun, but damn if it doesn't get cold in a hurry. and cold ain't no fun. but there are hundreds of camp grounds in the mountains. it's just about finding the ones that you want to go to.

here's one that might spark some interest.

Definitely the Gorge. Only an IDIOT can get lost in the gorge. If you get confused, just go downhill to get to the river, then follow the river upstream and take the trail out of the gorge up to the ranger station at the falls or go downstream and end up coming out on highway 126. Also, if you can stumble across a trail in the gorge, follow it up and you'll come out on either 105 or the other forest road on the Table Rock side of the gorge. The only way you should have to be rescued in the gorge is if you get sick (and you will if you don't treat the water) or if you fall and get hurt (which is very possible). Like Chip said, it's not exacltly easy going.

The last trip I took into the gorge, I took 2 fishing rods and fished from Pinch End trail up to the falls. I ended up only fishing for about a mile of it because by then I'd busted my @$$ enough times to break both rods. Those river rocks in the gorge are the slickest things on earth.

I agree, and have said it many times. But, you know as well as I do, it happens way too often.

I love Robinsville, but if your gonna camp just go to either little snowbird or Lake Santeetla sp.? great camping, good fishing, some hiking, I guess, maybe. I never leave let the river or cooler get too far away...
