The missus and I were talking about going camping in the next couple of weeks. I first brought up the idea of going camping in McDowell park but we decided to go somewhere else seing that we could be there within 3 minutes of my place. Then I thought about heading up to the Smoky Mountains but I don't know if I wanna go that far, kind of looking for somewhere within an hour or so that will give us some activities to do (hiking, fishing, etc.). Looking for somewhere where we could just drive up and set up camp instead of backpacking in. Any ideas? Thanks -Mike

If you can handle an extra hour lets go to the mountains.. Might as well make it worth while. I know tons of spots in Boone all over the Appalachian Mountains.. Or even better, 30 - 45 mins outside of that is TN. Even better spots there. Or you you want, take it to Brown Mountain (also known as Booger Mountain) and see if you can experience the "Brown Mountain Lights" Phenomenon... Spooooky!

local camping

Try Dan Nicholas park in the Salsbury area. Real nice place for a quick get away. It is a state park.:bronco:

Uhwarrie/Badin areas or Morrow Mountain (not sure about camping there though) on Lake Tillery.

Hey Mike, I'm pretty sure Kings mountain state park has car camping. From your place, go over the bridge & out rt.49 to rt557 then right on rt55. Go straight through Clover & about four miles, turn right on rt. 160 (McGill's) then it's about two miles up on the left. Also My son has camped at Crowder's Mountain, in N.C. it's West of Gastonia, I think you go out Linwood rd. to get there. No car camping though. The walk into primitive sites aren't too far from the parking lot from what he says.

kings mtn is a good spot for family. Easy to find of of 85, just go to kings mtn exit and go left. can't miss it. You can also paddle boat and fish.
