Is there any place that allows for camping that is free or very low cost and allows campfires? I want to take my 5yr old son on a 3 day 2 night ( no girls allowed ) trip and would rather not have a bunch of people around and I'm on a serious budget. I have all the equipment I just need the place. Any thoughts and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

camping is free in the pisgah ntl forrest around brevard. lots of road side camping.

Since you are in Charlotte, the Uwahrrie national forest is only about an hour from you. There are a lot of people in the badin lake rec area this time of year, but you can go to the Wood run area and camp anywhere along the hiking or biking trails. Fires are allowed, and you wont see as many people in that area of the forest. There are established camp sites others have used with fire pits, or you can just hike as far as you want from the trail and set up camp anywhere.

This is what I'm gonna do since it's free. I just picked up a two man tent from Wal-mart last night that is lightweight and just big enough for me to sit up and have some head room. You should see my 5yr old; he is so excited that his sisters are constantly telling him to stop rubbing it in, lol. I just bought him a little pack, pistol belt, angled led flashlight and his own canteen. This is going to be so fun.

URE is king for camping in the Charlotte area. Another option is Morrow Mountain in Albemarle, but it's not as private. (Unless you do the primitive camping option.)

I think its great that your taking your son camping.
We don't normally get a lot of guy time since I work a lot and there being mostly girls in the house. I took him to the gun show in Feb and he loved it.

I like the fact that it's a little more private especially since it's his first time out camping. I'll be able to teach him some things like building a camp fire, putting a tent up, and ( for just in case reasons ) being able to get food and water. Obviously this won't be the last time we go out together just the boys I'm actually planning on making it at least once a year thing if not twice a year.

My parents never took me as a kid, but I did go with some friends a few times as a teen. Never cared for it in my younger years, but I bet if my dad had taken me as a child I would have loved it. Now, I love being outdoors and camping.

I would go to URE or Morrow Mt. I've been to both and enjoyed it. I will say that you could also look into boy scouts, well since hes young I guess it would be cub scouts. I was in it for a while then it just got too rule based and no fun and I left but if theres a good bunch he'll have a lot of fun.

Good for you man,I think that's great!I took my 7 year old son a couple times last year,we had a blast!!

Thanks for all the encouragement guys I really appreciate it. I can't wait for the 15th ( lol, how many times have you heard someone say they can't wait for April 15th ) to come along so we can go.

My boy is almost 14 now and we have been camping a couple times a year since he was an infant. He still loves it and likes to take charge when we go because he knows what to do.
Hope y'all have a blast

I meet with different families everyday. I'm glad to see that there are some pops that actually want to pass down some lessons. You'll enjoy Uwharrie. I go on the trails to camp and even though offroaders pass by from time to time, I feel like I'm escaping the everyday bull jive.

Hats off to ya

Well I have surefire batteries on the way ( got a box of 12 for just over $36 from surefire. ) now I only have a few more things to get a Boonie hat for the boy, a shovel, and food. Already have the Alice pack sorted out and ready to be filled with clothes and food.

Question:

Do you have to carry in your own fire wood or can you use what you find on the ground?

The reason I ask is because when we went camping up on the Blue Ridge Parkway they said we were not allowed to use the fallen/busted tree limbs and had to buy fire wood from the front gate/office or the gas station. I just want to be prepared for when I go since you can't go camping without a camp fire.

I would think with it being off season for the trails that there is a ton of wood on the ground. That's all we have ever used.

That's great. I was hoping I could just do that and not have to spend a ton of money on fire wood since that is just stupid. Thanks for the info.
