Can power steering be used without power?

I've got the column and gearbox installed on my 76 CJ-7 but not the pump or hoses. Can I put in caps at the gearbox where the hoses attach and just drive without hooking up the rest of the power steering stuff right now?

Better eat your spinach bro! It's my experience that UN-powered PS is harder than straight manual steering... not that you can't do it, just that it'll be hard.

You need to move it or something? I *may* have a set of V8 PS hoses if it will help? LMK

x2. You can do it, but it is a PAIN! It is way harder to steer than vehicles that came without power steering in the first place.

BUT, what you can do ( and I did this once on an old chevy and it does work)

if you have hard lines that will thread into the ports on the gear box, loop a length of hose between them, pouring a bit of fluid in the hose and turning the wheel at the same time, until it comes out the other end, then connect the hose.

sort of a "self" enegizing set up, but it'll keep thing lubed and will at least help lessen the effort to steer.

( I did this on a '78 Chevy Malibu, had NON power steering gear and the sector shaft broke, could only find a power steering box and this is what I did, worked fine)
