Going to pull one of my other projects into the garage shortly.
Specs:
69 Lincoln Mark lll
56k miles
460, c6, 9"
20" Lowenhart wheels, lowered a bit. Going to do air ride at some point.

Question is, I'm considering cutting off the top. There is a little rust under the vinyl top and the top isn't great. The windows are frameless, and even the trim inside is two piece. The end goal would be to finish the edges and make the top removable, but for now it would be topless. It's by no means a perfect, or especially rare car. Just a fun cruiser.
Thoughts?

I'm no expert but that car in that shape has got to be rare, I can't remember seeing a 2 door on the road at all. Those wheels are PERFECT for that old pimpmobile and no matter waht you do to it it will be badass!..........Hot.........Rod.........Lincoln:smokin:

It's body on frame, flex shouldn't be much of an issue.
I do have a garage for storage.

9032 hard top coupes produced in 1969, how many are left unmolested or not totally rotted out ?

Cutting the roof off a Unitized body will require floor pan bracing to keep the doors from jamming shut over time, also need to keep the 460 from twisting it in half.

I say instead of cutting the top just paint it gloss black and lay it on the ground

I've seen body on frame cars flex with the top chopped off. Obviously not as much as a unibody car, but they still do a bit. Most people just box the frame and that is enough.

Hate to admit it, but I'm much more of a car guy than a 4x4 guy.

That's my thinking, the frame is pretty heavy. If the interior Was in better shape, and the Windows worked I wouldn't even be thinking of it.

That's the Lincoln Mark III, & was in competition with the Eldorado. I had several 4 door Lincolns, as a young man. Also lucky enough to purchase a 71 Mark III, from a Doctor, in excellent condition! I wish I still had it, but who can afford the petro. 71 was the last great year, as in 72, the Feds made all autos have shock asorber Bumpers, & UN-leaded gas. I also later had a 69 Mark III, but it was Fair condition. These Are still available, & priced on condition, but I think they top out at $15-18 K. As much as I love them, I will have to say "uglyjeepoffroad"'s Lincoln, would cost TOO much to restore, so go ahead & make what you can, of it!

Fast and loud built one that sold for $25k. I have less than $2k in it including the wheels and new tires so it should be fun.

I think you should abandon the whole thing and sell it too me! I would not cut it, I don't think the rear fender lines would look as good. Or should I say stand out as much and make the stance look so nasty. I love those hard crisp high fender lines on the back. Scrapping pavement is where this thing needs to be.

True, It needs to scrape pavement, just can't decide whether it should have a top while it does.
As for selling it to you, everything is for sale for the right price.

You said you had less than 2k in it. I figure 1k is a fair offer :)

From a value standpoint, you will kill it by cutting the top off. There will be very few people looking for a topless car. Now if you made it a removable hardtop, that'd be really cool but very labor intensive. But removing the top would be no easy job either

True. It will be heavy.
Not a huge market for it anyway, if I can make it cool to drive I'll probably do it. I still have a '54 bel aire and an excursion I can drive if it rains. Lol

That thing is sick even with the top on. I think that if you chop the top off it will look too generic. A lot of the character and meanness of the look this thing has is in the proportions of the top to the rest of the body. Cut the top off and it might look like every other old school convertible out there.

Then again... Nothing beats a roofless old school sled. Win win.

Is it driveable? If it is, peel that vinyl off, fix the rust, repaint flat black, and have fun. That thing is damn cool.
