So I need a car. My XJ isn't cutting it anymore. I want something that is comfortable to drive and doesn't jar me around on every bump.
I am looking for something that is not too plain but don't need heated seats or anything like that.
Been looking at the 2008-2009 Mazda 3's. My wife has the '13 Mazda 3 and we love it. In laws have a loaded 2008 mazda 3 that is super fun to drive.
Want something that is going to last me at least 4-5 years.

Just looking for something that I can take pride in but not spend more than 10k on.

What would you guys go for?

IMO the Mazda 3 is a great choice. Not a big car but you don't have kids IIRC so you'll be fine. They're pretty reliable and generally maintenance is eazy and parts are not too expensive.
Of course if you want fun, get a Speed 3...

oh how I want a speed. just can't justify getting one though.

I think you are going to struggle to flat bill properly in an 08-09 Mazda 3. You will quickly figure out who your real bro's are, because your fake bro's will probably not want to hang with you and be seen in your car. I would recommend an F350 lifted up with 7.3 diesel rolling coal out of a stack sticking up through the bed.

He can always knock 3" off the suspension, add a massive negative camber kit to the rear wheels and get solid white 20" wheels

TDI Jetta.

Go for the Mazda 3 if you like it. My sister just bought a Mazda 6 for commuting, and loves it.

FWIW: my sister bought a civic new in 03 and sold it to me when it blew a head gasket in 2010. She bought a Mazda 3 to replace it and was disappointed.

The Civic was great for me. All in cost to drive it including repairs and wear items (but not fuel) from 2010 to 2016 was sub 2k. I replaced it with a TDI from Chad on the board here and have been enjoying that as well.

Had a civic once...beat the shit out of that 4banger/5spd...wore it like a suit, but damn if the thing didn't get 40mpg. Sold it to a guy in the board with about 230k on the odo...

No idea. I wouldn't buy a jetta with an auto because you can get a manual. The 2004-2005 TDI Passats are great cars, they just have a few known issues that need to be addressed. I had an 04 Passat TDI from 2007-2015, 70k-200k miles. I sometimes regret selling it. Comfortable, smooth, classy looking car, handled pretty good, plenty of power, and easily 40+mpg highway.
