Career change

Worked for a little over 18 yrs in Florida for a Machine / Fabrication shop that did contract manufacturing for Aerospace and DOD suppliers. Got laid off and made the move to North Carolina and ended up working at a Company that does injection molding. (also builds injection molds) Although it's still manufacturing it was a pretty big change. Been with them 12 years now and I couldn't be happier.

I worked in the concrete business for years, different companies doing different things. Got "let go" from my last job about the time my son was born. The wife and I decided it would be cheaper for one of us to stay home instead of paying for daycare (that crap aint cheap). So for the past two years I've been a stay at home Dad and working PT doing maintenance for a retail chain. Ive also been doing side work as a handyman. Once my son enters preschool/kindergarten, I plan on expanding the handyman business. There's nothing better than working for yourself.....

Danny why not see if they have an opening in r and d? Seems they are hiring from the word around town. Then you can keep tge eng back ground and the same company...

Ideally I would stay with the same company, but do something completely different. I'd guess 90% of the jobs here are sitting in a cubicle for the vast majority of the day though. The other 10% are working on the trucks or making parts in the machine shop. I work in product development now. I turned 40 yrs old early this year, so I think the time to make a big career change would be within the next 5 years. I'm guessing that if I wait till I am 50+, it will be very difficult to find a job in a new career.

id never listen to accountant on a decision like this...

If you're going to attempt to insult me, at least get it right. I'm now the U.S. controller of mergers & acquisitions for a $20 billion international aerospace conglomerate. Business decisions are what I do, solving problems is what I get paid for. But you're probably right, what do I know, I'm just a punk ass 20 something year old.

Just curious though...of what I said, what can be refuted?

It really is...get to see everything from scrap recycling for raw materials to finished plane frames to build process for GE and Rolls Royce turbine engines to crash tests, etc. Its actually a new job, was promoted last month, been a lot of traveling and 20 hour days and playing dual roles until they back fill my old position. It is pretty stressful in the sense that the job description was literally 'break down the company, build the company back up, make them corporate compliant and get results soon.' If the results aren't big enough, quick enough, I could be out on my can tomorrow...their words, not mine. But like I said in one of my previous posts, determine what your end goal is and take the path to get you there. But that's just my two cents from a lowly accountant.

That's cool man. Hopefully you won't be out on your can anytime soon. Sounds like a job that really grabs your attention...thats what I want.

how was i insulting you by saying accountant, i was refering you as only considering the numbers

emo much?

I didn't see where I considered any numbers... Or where anything I said could be refuted. Regardless...point remains the same, guy wants to change jobs, make a career move, not a job move. Figure out what end goal makes you happy and won't hurt your neck, then develop a plan to get there.
