Carpet winch

We often have to remove old carpet before installing new carpet. Most of the time, the previous installer, uses cheap glue and a small notched trowel, which makes it rather easy to remove the old carpet, especially if we cut it into narrower strips.....BUT, Sometimes we come across carpet that just wont come up. No matter how hard we pull, it's not budging. ITS THE GLUE! It is on too thick and it is the best glue money can buy... practically perminent ..it is stuck!

So... I decided to build myself a carpet winch!

3500 lb ATV winch attached to 3/4 plywood. Couple of handles, and a bunch of tackstrip nailed to the bottom , makes a good anchor.

A couple of 2x4's ,some hardware ,with tack strip in between the 2 boards ,grip the carpet as it sandwiches together via impact gun.

But that led to this... And this works faster for the large church room.

Of course, we cant use the jeep winch in all of the classrooms, so we will switch back to the smaller home built unit when we get that far!

Looks like you need long welding leads and fork lift quick connects to a running vehicle.

So what do you do with the old glue that's left? Just put more on top?

We've used a scissor lift with 2x's attached by cable then you can drive it. AS long as you need a lift on the job for demo. I've also seen a contractor had some type of tool that had a handle a wheel and a blade so you could cut it into strips before pulling it.

Just stay away from slab prep!

Yep! Actually, we will smooth it up and remove any loose stuff. But yeah, no need to clean this concrete completly.

Looks like pain to me. Anyway did you consider maybe the 120v version of that winch? 1500 lbs. Capacity 120 Volt AC Electric Winch

Didnt have time to shop around.

I was in that church a month ago to test carpet to see how hard it was to pull out. We were in a back Room and it come up rather easily. I was unaware that the rest would be so hard until we showed up that day and started working.
