does the clunker have to run? as long as insurance is kept up and it ran til recently?

a friend has a vehicle with no clutch (tranny pulled) and its more logical to trade it in rather than fix.

has to be driven in....

Has to run so that they can trash the engine with a chemical additive and save the environment further pollution from same engine!

Then it's off to the scrap yard, where somebody buys it cheap, pulls the locked up motor, sticks in a reman, and it's back on the road. Tax dollars wasted, and the "polluter" car is still on the road. All that happens is the car dealer makes a sale (gov't propped up sale) and pockets some cash. Everything else stays the same. Except the poor guy that had a running clunker and now has a car payment, and still might loose his job next week. :(

Vehicle must be shredded or crushed and the recylcer has to sned the vin plate to the feds.
They have 30 days once it hits the recycle yard to shred crush. As a result a freind that owns a small yard will not tkae the from loca dealers (even for free) because the crusher opnly comes round every 90 days or so.

I thought they could sell the cars for parts as long as the the drivetrain was destroyed and the VIN plate was sent in. but i could be wrong.

They can sell some parts off the car, but it still has to be crushed within the allotted time frame. The yards are saying it's not worth the effort, since the motors are the most profitable item on the vehicle. With scrap prices down, it costs them nearly as much to process and transport as they get back in scrap fees.

vehicle has to run...

My dad told me something the other day though. He listens to a lot of radio shows, one of the ones he listens to is Keith Larson (Lawson?) out of Charlotte.

I guess some farmer type called in, said he turned in two of his farm trucks (both still ran) for cash for clunkers and got 2 new cars. Turned around, sold both cars on Craigslist and got 42k out of the deal

Dunno how that worked though...

Financed the cars and then sold them for 21k each.

If you finance it, then the bank gets the title.

But how the hell could he make 42k in profit off that? The only profit I can think of is 9k (4500x2 for the CFC's.) - value of the 2 traded in trucks.

when you sell, the bank will give the title to the new owner :)

$9k is better than nothing

Assuming you could sell a new car for what you just bought it for.

I dunno, that sounds mighty damn suspect to me.

Now maybe if he had 2 vehicles and a friend who wanted a new car:
1- friend goes in negotiaties deal
2- farmer goes in buys at negotiated deal and gives clunker
3- friend then buys from farmer at pre negotiated prices and farmer pockets extra...

Hmmm I have 6 vehicles that qualify, and a friend who is GM of a dealership I need to call him maybe I can float some paperwork.
