Cash for clunkers.

We have a few really nice Jeeps at the Chrysler/Jeep dealer I work for the 4.0L don't go without a fight same with a 5.0L in a 80's Lincoln Town Car. But a 01 Chevy 1500 5.3L lasted about 20 seconds.

Funny since the program started we have been very slow in service but the line of cars is getting bigger. I thank Nobama daily for this stupid plan.

I was thinking about something the other day with this program.

My TJ qualifies for it (4cyl TJ)

I was thinking, why cant I take off all the crap I put on it over the 3 years ive had it, sell that myself, then take the jeep in? How are they going to know that I took parts off?

I know the TJ isnt worth anything near 4500 dollars, and I figure if I sell the stuff that ive got on it, I could get close to 5500 out of it by the end, and get most of what I paid for it back.

Too bad I cant afford a new car

You can take off whatever you want as long as you bring in a driving vehicle that is registered, tagged, insured, BUT you are under the same impression that I was, that you get the entire $4500. They don't have to give you the full amount.

Plus TJs have great resale, so you'd be cutting your own throat. Once again though, only if any of us could afford new car payments and could actually find something new that we liked.

Not all vehicles qualify for the 4500, it depends on what you are trading in and what you are buying. The 2 WJ's we had come in(breaks my heart) were traded in for Compass's so they got the 4500 if they traded in for anything with a V8 it would have been 3500. I know that after talking to the salesperson who took them both in.

I read that the "clunker" being traded must have a factory EPA rating not higher than 18MPG when it was new. That would exclude a TJ with a 4 popper and the 4.0L because the 4.0L had a factory rating of 19MPG.

I wonder how many of the cars "sold" under this program will end up repo'd in 3 to 6 months when people can't make their car payments.
Personally, I have done the math. It costs me less to keep my YJ that is paid for and gets 13MPG on the road than it does to buy a new death trap that gets 30MPG.

The whole program is just wrong anyway. More government manipulation of the economy.

I stand corrected. The official "combined" MPG for my YJ is 17. Thus it qualifies.
The clunker rebate is 3x the trade in value. Still wouldn't do it though.
I don't need a speed bump.
But maybe a Jeep Patriot. It qualifies on the purchasing side. Just don't need the payment and insurance cost.
Useful link to see if your junker is a clunker.

If I were a sneaky bass terd, I'd swap my YJ 4.0 into the XJ since the XJ motor is in better shape and more power.
Grab a junk yard XJ driver's seat to take out the Bestop Trail max driver's seat. Take off the Hidden Hitch and remove the K&N intake. Then clunk the XJ for a Patriot. Patriot is probably the smallest thing my 6'1" 13 year old will fit in. Measured him today. Little guy popped another inch. he better stop growing or I'll have no choice but to buy a dang ugly minivan.

How the hell did that Volvo qualify then?

I think there's something they aren't telling us about this thing.
