So I’m not a watch wearing kinda guy bc I’ve broke every watch I’ve put in my wrist. With that being said I hear these g shocks are pretty durable but also really pricey for someone who doesn’t geek on watches... looking at two diff ones the gd350 and the non g shock protrek270. Anyone have experience with these watches? Really want one with vibrating alarm and compass, I can’t seem to find a non gps watch with A/B/C functions and vibration tho so I have to settle for one or the other it seems!

I've had a couple of them (G-Shocks) over the years and never had any issues. Currently sporting a 5 year old Suunto (very well known in the compass/clinometer circles) Vector that has seen better days...

About 5 years ago I went with a lower end G-shock. I'm not much of a watch wearer, and didn't want to get crazy on the price. This one was $70 then and now.

Still going strong. It also held up to my Mastiff gnawing on it once.

I recommend them.

Love mine but need to get a new band for it. After wearing it for years, the band started coming apart at the notch where I wear it.

Hell yeah I’m leaning toward the GD350b bc of vibrating alarm I hate watches sounding off when I’m the only one who wants an alarm! I’ve seen some of these g shocks have dog issue specifically ones from Thailand but few and far between! @Caver Dave i like the suunto alpha traverse a lot, but unfortunately gps won’t be allowed for what I’m using em for I believe I’m gonna stick to ole reliable compass for my navigation and use my watch for time and alarm only. Maybe o e day I’ll pick up a suunto core or alpha they are wicked for sure!

Jaysandkays make some pretty sick straps for the gshocks nato/Zulu bands seem to be the way to go! They also offer metal adapters instead of plastic which is a upgrade if ya rough on em!

I’ve ran G-shock and suunto. My suunto is on a target somewhere in the Middle East. The strap broke. It was the weak link. Never had an issue with gshocks. Straps are a little beafier. I’ve got an older solar one. Supposed to charge itself when you’re outside. I’ve trashed it with paint overspray, so now I go watch less.

Luminox ftw

Luminox ftw
Hell far, a band for most luminox costs same as the watch I want... haha they are nice no doubt, I recall a guy Sporting a nox I worked with at race track and it was def a good looking watch he swore by!

Yeah the one I’m looking at is solar bc nobody’s got time to be changing batteries , believe batt life is 5 years on gd350 if it makes it that long on my arm I’ll be pleasantly surprised... I’m gonna swap out straps for nylon I believe or NATO style cheap insurance bc that resin don’t seem like it’s gonna hold up but it may be more durable than I’m giving it credit for. Suunto May be a option later on I’m diggin the size of em compared to everything else I’ve seen!

My everyday wear watch is a bertucci. It was inexpensive, and I honestly believe it is bombproof. I have never had a watch last more than a year or so, even $500 plus titanium watches. I have had it 6 years, and if I ever manage to kill it, I will buy another just like it.

I never trusted the altimeter or compass on the suunto for anything serious. You’ve got to make sure to calibrate it for the area you’re working in which requires knowing the declanation, elevation, and some other stuff. I did like it for the millibars though. I knew when the pressure started dropping I was gonna get get wet soon.

I wear a G-Shock and an Apple Watch. I prefer the G-shock over any watch I have ever worn and love that I can knock the crap out of it then wipe it off and looks brand new. Very durable for sure and when you consider how long they last, the price isn't that bad.

I’ll add another plug for g-shock. It’s been submerged in salt water for hours on several occasions, it’s been at 20,000 ft, extreme heat, and cold. I’ve changed the battery once. Got it in 2011. Paint overspray finally killed it only because I can’t see the screen very well. It’s still working.

Yeah after heavy consideration I’m gonna pass on the compass style watches for now and stick to a lensatic compass, the accuracy can be off more than I’m probably gonna want to miss a target at!! I figured it would be helpful after plotting and finding degrees to use the watch instead of pulling compass out each time after paces but truly it’s not gonna be much more effort In the long run! Barometer would be nice to have but even if I know I’m getting wet I’m not gonna be able to hide and stay dry. Lol I forgot how much I liked land nav after going back over it the last few months! Learned a few good things in scouts...
