CBs are required for some events, so I'm looking to buy one. Handheld CBs (w/ weather) are about the same price as mounted ones. Any one have experience with them?
My Jeep has no soft/hardtop, plus I have a truck too. The portable option, possibly with the extra antennae and mic, seems like a reasonable compromise for occasional use.
I've searched the board a bit and can't find a previous thread that details comparing them. Just one comment about needing to lean close to the windshield to use them (but at least I won't get RF Burn from the antennae ;)
Thanks,
Chris

I have a handheld, cant pickup chit on it!

the hand held units are not going to have the range of good mounted unit. I owned a hand held one and it sucked even w/ the external ant. I wish I had saved my money and got a good mounted one. I have a uniden Pc78elite. with a big ole' redneck whip and I get out pretty good. at least the truckers tell me that I'm blowing there ears off when I have my ant turned up... it also has a weather emergency alert that will startle the snot out of you if you have it turned on. I had a cobra w/ the weather stuff, but I don't like it as good as my uniden.

check out this web site even if you don't have a jeep:

As was said, unless you just want to hear the weather band...even with the ext antenna, they just lack the range to send or receive anything.

Circuit City has...
Cheap $50 = Midland 40-Channel Handheld CB Radio (75785)
Kit $110 = Cobra HH Roadtrip Mini Handheld CB Radio (HHROADTRIP)

I'm not set on either, was just pricing them out and seeing the options. Plus, both are web-only and I hate to wait for shipping. I'm cash and carry whenever possible.
