I've recently inherited a cb that was my grandpas. I am a total novice an need to know what would be my best set up for use on my 4Runner in the Uwharrie forest. Firestik antennas keep coming up in my searches but I am open to advice.

Tune the antenna is the key. Just get one that is easily adjusted for tuning (most of the firestiks are, just look at the end and they'll have an adjustment screw that is obvious). I just installed a wilson 4 ft antenna on a Uniden radio and am real happy with the results. It has a set screw and adjustment on the end. Many opinions on the various antenna makers but I came to the conclusion from my research it didn't make too much difference as long as you tune it and get some decent coax cable. The top loader fiberglass type are quite popular but maybe not the best but my guess is they are more than adequate for what we do with these talking to a rig 10 ft behind us :). Another myth is the cable length one. Doesn't matter on lenght, just get good cable (most will be 18ft anyway so if you believe the myth that's fine you're good with that eitherway since it's half wavelength then to make everyone happy!) and set it up and tune it. You'll be good to go.

Thanks. Do cb antennas "shadow" their signal if low on the bumper.

Thanks

So as long as the top coil is above the roof line I'm good?

It will still cast a shadow. I'd aim to have as much of the antenna as high above the body as possible. It's obviously a compromise... but you can be guaranteed that if you mount a 4ft Firestick to the back bumper, it won't broadcast toward the front of the vehicle very well.
