It all depends on what you want it for. A cheap compact cb is good for trail riding but you won't get near as much distance as a big one. Figure out how and where you want to mount your antenna, that will have a lot to do with length and type. If its taller than the roof line you'll have better range but hang it up on everything

A cheap cb and a good antenna and coax cable is way better than a great cb and a shitty antenna. 8' whip antennas can put out a great signal but they're better for street driven rigs. A firestik fiberglass antenna is pretty good on the trails as long as its mounted with a spring.

Since I have a roof rack does it need to be higher than the rack or just the roof line?

So if I could get a cobra 19dx iv with a 3-4' ( can't remember exactly) firestik antenna all brand new for like $40 is that a good deal?

With a firestik you will have to tune it and if you mount it where you can't find a good ground you will never be able to tune the antenna right. I have a firestik now with a great ground but before that I had a magnet mount on the roof and that thing was hassel free! Except for when branches knocked it off on the trail :kaioken:

You will want a 4' antenna if you get a firestik. make sure you get the one with the screw tip that makes adjustment convenient.
