4ft tall chain-link fence. 10ft wide double gate needs to be replaced. Fence is over 20 yrs old and last time we opened it up to put a trailer in the back yard both sides broke at the corner welds. It's basically being held together and we've got boards and a wheel in front of it, but it's only a matter of time before the dogs figure it out and go exploring the neighborhood.

Depending on the cost, Andy also wants to move the gate to another location that would make it much easier to back a trailer into the back yard. We'd like to put up a privacy fence, but that definitely isn't in the budget anytime soon.

I dont think a privacy fence is all that much... isnt it a normal chain link with inserts? or do you mean one of those wooden fences
 
like erik i work at a box, specifically with this stuff. Your looking at about 50 dollars a panel for 6' x 8' long privacy fence. That's not including vertical poles or gates. And a 10ft wide gate is pretty big. But, if you want call 1-800-Home Depot and they will come out and give you a free quote. But chainlink is cheap and easy.

It's not really a matter of "can't", it's more like the wunderkid of fab has not the time nor the patience (more importantly) to lug the welder home from the shop and fix the fence.

Besides, if the neighbor saw him, they might call the city and report us running a fence repair business in a residential zone.

He went by Home Depot this afternoon and said that they had virtually nothing in the way of fencing, much less chain-link fencing. And apparently the people working there this afternoon weren't the most helpful. I guess I'll run by Lowes on the way home from work tomorrow to see what they have.

Given the size of the lot, running privacy fencing at $50 a panel, not including posts and gates is way out of our budget right now. The 10ft wide gate opening is what is there now (it's 2 5ft gates that meet in the middle), but he'd actually like it to be a little wider if we end up being able to move the gate because it's already tight enough getting a trailer through.

If you look for pro's Hartsell fencing in Charlote, are good and cheap.

I've used the three times and been pleased every one.
 
Ya'll will probably have a hard time getting anyone to do this for a reasonable price. A 10' chain link gate, even though it's in two pieces is about the limit. Most likely anyone that you get to do it will not make it strong enough for what you need.
You may want to consider running some wood gothic picket fence from the side of the house to the corner and building a split 12' gate into it. I can build a dual 6' gate that will not sag. Problem is that three weeks ago I had time, now I won't until July.
Best bet now is to call some local fence companies to patch what you've got. Chain link is very simple but flimsy.
