I've got a Stihl 021 that's about 25 years old. Runs like a champ. Only thing I wonder about is the bar oil. It seems to go through a lot. I'd have to fill it up every time I filled the fuel. Is it normal to go through that much bar oil?

I have one 36 years old, great chain saw. I found the Stihl brand bar oil works the best. What oil are you using? I've known guys to use used.engine oil, that will go through quick.

I have two Stihl saws. Both of them are about the same consumption relative to fuel. I fill the bar oil up every time I fill the fuel up, but it seems like I could maybe fill the oil up every other time I fill the fuel and it might be OK, but I never let it go like that.

My Stihl is about 25 years old, and I will run out of bar oil just before I run out of gas.

well lucky me, Stihl is one of our bigger clients, so I have a stash of Stihl brand oil, mix, even Stihl gas.

thanks for the replies. sounds like I'm running pretty normal.

X2 on the above replies citing oil use. You should use approximately a tank of oil per tank of gas. Also, most quality saws have adjustment mechanisms so that you can adjust the amount of oil delivered to the chain.

Is your self oiling or man oiling??? I have one of each(neither are Stihls) and the auto uses about the same amount as yours, but it has an adjustment on it for the oiling system. My other one is man oil so it always needs oil when I fill up.

Bar oil = the more the merrier.. My Super XL smokes a MS290 Farm Sloth ;) Automatic with manual override FTW.. I've got other saws, McCulloch Titan 35,50,57,620.. but yes, fill oil+gas everytime, usually run out of both at the same time. (And I the Titan 57 to stump 24"-48" trees).. I can make the XL (56 cc?) smoke a MS390 FWIW.. Titan 57.. better grab a Husq 472XP to run with it. At least your stihl is a decent saw (coming from someone who works on them)
