Chainsaws

The 400 is the same weight as the 362 but puts out about 1 more HP. Doesn’t sound like much but is considerable.
Depending on how you tech you can still get a 372 with a standard carb.

So, what does it typically run to port a 261CM? Where would be the best place to take it?

I'm a one saw guy and love my 261 but wish it had just a bit more umph.

I’d guess around $300-400, that was the going rate last time I checked, but that was also 3-4 years ago. @termitebuffet is in the Asheboro area I believe and is well known in the chainsaw circles for doing excellent work.

X2, he ported my 461 and it screams!

What size bar are you running?

What size bar are you running?
I have a 16" and a 20" currently. No problems with the 16". With the 20" bar, it just seems that it's a bit underpowered. Still cuts fine and the yellow chain is better than the green. I also want to explore the possibility of a 24" bar.

So you already knew what I was about to say, the 261 is perfect with a 16” bar. I have had a 026 and currently have a 261 and both loved a 16” bar, which follows the old rule of thumb: 1/3 the CC is the perfect size bar.

As for a 24” bar, that’s what I run in the ported 461 :D

I would love to run my stock old worn out 046 against your ported 461 if we ever get the chance. I don’t know if mine is just a factory freak, or if I’m just easily impressed, and that would be a good comparison.

“if I’m just easily impressed” wayyyy to many jokes there :flipoff2:

Heck yeah, if we can ever be in the same place at the same time, be happy to. I must warn you I also have a bark box on it, you know to impress the ladies

They like it when you bark at them? I’ll have to try that! :p

(Mine does have an enlarged muffler slot and the spark screen removed)

Trash pile bound unless one of you suckers want them. @jeepinmatt done shot me down

Need more details. Y’all know I love a project. My tree guy offered me some parts saws to play with. Like I need more projects but ain’t that what keeps us moving forward?

With this crowd I suspect no....but do any of you fellas pay to have chains sharpened?

What's the going rate?

Been doing a few for my neighbor. He really likes the results. He works around a few landscapers and tree folks. Thought about hustling up a few more to do.

When was in La. (The state not the burnt pedo land) I was paying the Mennonite dude up the way $7. He offered different cut profiles and was 24 hr turn around. Here now locally I run em till they are toast and buy a new one cause local price is $12 and the quality of work is pure shit. I’m too lazy to sharpen my own (read: I’m not good at the science of it). YMMV

If I could find someone that would do it right for my 25” chains I’d gladly pay $10-12 or maybe more, and $10ish for the 20”. Instead I have about a dozen 25” sitting beside my sharpener and a dozen 20” and a couple for the Milwaukee and a couple .325s for the old 028. At some point I will capitalize on myself and get it done. The problem is I’m a perfectionist, so instead of just sharpening them all “pretty good”, I want them to be balanced left and right, with rakers just right, and hand finished with a file because the grinder always rolls up a little burr and heat affected edge. So that turns in to 10-15 minutes per chain, times 30 chains…

I keep a lot of chains and just drop them off for sharpening. I think it's $8 each but not sure.

@jeepinmatt never filed one to finish. Used to hand file all of them

@skyhighZJ that was my neighbor until I convinced him to let me have a go at one

@R Q that's the volume of love to set down and do

Thanks fellas. I never wanted to charge my neighbor and friend. He demanded to pay me. Was curious what the rates were like.

As for profiles I haven't tried any chisel or square grinds. I have messed a good bit with various pitches and back cuts. Getting it even and equally sharp keeps em cutting real clean and straight. I like to have the bars to inspect but generally don't come with.

As for file work I used to hand file all my stuff til 36 inch bars came around.....to dange many teeth. And Matt those burs disappear after one burrap in the wood don't they? I find was less burr if I take light passes now matter how worn the chain is on the gullet or face and tips.

We always bought bulk chain at work and made our own. When I had a 5 gallon bucket full I’d take them in for a new edge. Once I took a bucket full of dulled brand new chains in and when I got them back, they had ground every tooth down to the safety mark! 5 gallons of chain that were only used twice. 🙁

Do y'all not believe in files? I just touch mine up every couple runs, they do great. Lets me examine condition and gauge chain health.
I've tried a couple different methods of sharpening. Mainly my milling chains. And they always come out off and the saw either rises or digs in the wood. I usually can mill a whole log with one chain so to me it's a no brainier to just pay the man that can help me make straight cuts.

On a side note the 460 started smoking working on a pine Sunday. Finished dropping it with the 261. Man that was a job. Looks like the 460 handle has a grove. So new one on the way.
