changing rear axle seal/bearing in dana 44 rear

I have a dana 44 in the rear of my 89 comanche. The drivers side axle seal just started leaking so im going to change it and the bearing. Do you have to remove the diff cover to get the axle out on a dana 44 or does it unbolt and slide out behind the drum?

It's not a c-clip axle so unbolt the retaining plate and it should pull out( might take a little persuasion).
