I think I have found a decent deal on some replacement tires for my truck

My truck currently has 265/75/16 Nexen Somethings

The tires I am looking at are 265/70/16 Michelin LTX's

I know the Michelins are much better tires. But will the slight difference make any difference?

I am thinking not, but just wanted to see what the collective wisdom here thought.

They will be an inch shorter, but the same width, your speedo will read a little fast if it is calibrated to the 265/75s. Don't know what you are putting them on, but you will gain a little bit of low end from the lowered gear ratio, but will run more rpm's at speed.

In all reality, the changes will be slight, it's only 1 inch, tires can vary almost that much from manufacturer to manufacturer while still having the same listed size.

If it's a good deal I say go for it, those LTX's are great tires, smooth, quiet, long lasting.

265 mm x 75% = 198.75 mm tall
265 mm x 70% = 185.5mm tall

13.25 mm shorter than original size
/ 25.4 mm/in = .521 inches shorter than original
just over 1/2 in shorter

I'd say go for it. Little smaller won't hurt and you'd never tell the difference by eye more than likely.

According to:

your speedo would read 60 and you'd be going 58, so its not a significant difference on odo.

I'd say you won't notice ANY seat of the pants difference as far as performance goes. FWIW, I'm not a big Mich fan but their mileage is unbeatable! If you need tires and the price is right on the Michs go for it!

I concur. I had a set of LTX 235/75-15 on a YJ and they don't like mud. at all. but I put 30k miles on them and they still had 50%+ when I sold it.

You forgot to multiply by two... You only did one sidewall, the radius would be 1/2" shorter, the diameter would be 1" shorter.

Again not a big difference. Oh and that miata calc sucks...

Yea, I wasn't meaning that he would notice any gains, just that theoretically, the lowered gear ratio supplied by the smaller tires would give a little mechanical advantage.

Thanks for the help. I am pretty good a jumping on things on craigslist, but this one slipped. Hadn't been up but a few hours when I called.
